**Job Description Summary:**
This position provides medical forensic exams to victims of intentional and/or interpersonal violence (sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking). He/She is accountable for the practice of forensic nursing as defined by state and national guidelines, the Ohio Revised Code, and the International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN).
**Responsibilities And Duties:**
80% Assessment/Diagnosis:
1. Collection of comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or situation in systematic and ongoing process: Involves patient and Law Enforcement.
2. Completes a detailed history as given by the patient/victim.
3. Prioritizes data collection activities (including photo documentation and body diagrams) based on patient's immediate condition, or anticipated needs of patient or situation. Completes a head-to-toe assessment looking for life threatening injuries for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment.
4. Uses appropriate evidence-based assessment techniques and instruments to collect, analyze and document initial and ongoing subjective and objective data from patients.
5. Collects evidence using a kit provided by the Ohio Department of Health while following all protocols from the Ohio Revised Code and the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
6. Identifies life threatening injuries or any injuries/ trauma and reports them to the physician.
7. Uses assessment data to identify pertinent nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems.
20%: Safety Planning/ Follow up care:
1. Involves Law Enforcement, patient, family when applicable and advocate to develop safety plan.
2. Coordinates follow up care for additional STI/HIV testing, trauma informed care or any other necessarily follow up care needed.
3. Modifies expected outcomes based on changes in status of patient or evaluation of situations, including development of outcomes that provide direction for continuity of care.
4. Testify in court, when called to do so regarding process of medical forensic examination, items collected, photographic documentation and medical record documentation.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
Associate's Degree (Required)BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, RN - Registered Nurse - Ohio Board of Nursing
**Additional Job Description:**
**SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE**
This position requires a current registered nurse license from the State of Ohio. Must complete a 40+ hour didactic training for adult/adolescent SANE, plus 40+ hour didactic training for adolescent/pediatrics or a combined 64+ hour didactic for adults/adolescents/pediatrics; perform speculum exams under the direct supervision of a physician/ NP/PA until competent; and complete a minimum of 3 adult/adolescent sexual assault exams with an experienced forensic nurse either on a patient or in a simulation environment until competent; complete approximately 8 pediatric exams with an experienced forensic nurse until competency met.
Must commit to being on call a minimum of 48 hours per month for their assigned area, attend bi-monthly meetings, as well as attend continuing educational opportunities.
Must be willing to commit to providing 2 years of service as a forensic nurse after training has been completed.
