Food Safety Specialist - 12 month Contract

In this field-based role covering Winnipeg territory, you will report to the Director, Food Safety and provide essential training, coaching, and guidance to store and market teams. You will ensure consistent food safety practices and regulatory compliance across the region, monitor adherence to standards, support teams with audit results, conduct audits as needed, and help manage food safety incidents efficiently. **This role is a 12 months contract** Here’s where you’ll be focusing: + Provide coaching, training, follow-up support, and review of corrective action plans related to Food Safety, Regulatory compliance, Pest Control inspections, and Ground Meat sampling for assigned retail stores and Retail Support Centres (RSCs). Ensure adherence to all elements of the Sobeys Food Safety Program. + Maintain accurate documentation and reporting of coaching visits, store coverage, ground meat sampling activities, customer complaint investigations, regulatory follow-ups, and pest control performance metrics. + Lead and support the timely development, execution, and completion of objectives within the strategic plan/roadmap, along with other assigned responsibilities. + Conduct and/or monitor required food safety audits across assigned retail and RSC facilities. Ensure all audits are completed within prescribed timelines and that follow‑up activities are executed promptly and effectively. + In collaboration with Food Safety Leadership, establish measurable continuous improvement goals aligned to your specific areas of influence. + Deliver food safety training and coaching as required or assigned, ensuring content is accurate, relevant, and operationally practical. + Facilitate Food Handler Certification for required retail store team members. + Demonstrate strong technical proficiency and exercise sound risk‑management judgment, drawing on available scientific evidence, best practices, and appropriate subject matter expertise. + Build strong, trust‑based relationships with operators and team members through effective communication, sound rationale, and credible expertise to support informed decision‑making and successful outcomes. + Communicate relevant issues, risks, or emerging concerns to leadership, district operators, and key stakeholders in a timely manner. Ensure matters are escalated to your leader at the appropriate level for action. + Maintain timely and accurate submission of expenses and adhere to corporate policies related to credit card use and financial responsibility. Exercise good judgment in supporting departmental budgets and spending decisions. + Collaborate with cross‑functional partners to support an integrated approach to food safety, quality assurance, and regulatory affairs, as assigned by the Team Lead. + Demonstrate a sense of urgency and responsiveness to inquiries, operational needs, and leadership requests. Support recall management and emergency responses within established timelines. + Be available to support after‑hours requirements as assigned. This includes working outside regular business hours to observe operations, assist with recall execution, or respond to emergencies. Ensure appropriate coverage for your assigned area during absences or vacation. + Proactively identify emerging business needs or trends and communicate anticipated issues to your manager to support coordinated, consistent, and harmonized solutions. + Maintain all required professional credentials, including ongoing CPFS certification, to support expertise in food safety What you have to offer: + Post secondary education (Food Science or General Science) or equivalent combination of education and work experience + One to three years experience in retail operations or merchandising or food manufacturing environment + Valid Driver’s License + CP-FS Certification + Understanding of Canadian Food Regulation at the Federal, Provincial + Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications, + Good communication skills **Who we are:** We started in a small town in Nova Scotia but we are now in communities of all sizes across this great country.
