Firefighter Paramedic

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for responding to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency calls to protect life and property. Participates in fire prevention programs and inspections, community education, station and apparatus maintenance, and training activities. 

CORE SCOPE OF POSITION

Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of structural, residential, commercial, industrial, chemical, petroleum, vehicle, and wild land fires. Responds to and performs skilled tasks at the scene of emergency calls and non-emergency calls including rescues, hazardous materials, flooding, natural disasters, false alarms, elderly assistance, vehicle, and residential lockouts. Operates radio-telephone equipment and communicates medical information to other EMS personnel as required. Performs fire control activities and utilizes strategies in the areas of victim rescue, entry, exposure tactics, ventilation, fire containment, and extinguishment. Performs primary and secondary physical assessment of ill or injured patients. Treats patients in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Protocols, policies, and operating procedures. May serve as a preceptor for paramedic and emergency medical technician training. Participates in fire prevention inspections of public assemblies, commercial, industrial, government buildings, and other public establishments to ensure compliance with codes and regulations pertaining to fire and life safety. Participates in daily inspections of condition and readiness of equipment. Cleans, washes, and services equipment. Inspects, tests, and maintains equipment and pump motors including nozzles, appliances, fittings, hydrants, fire extinguishers, hand and power tools, ropes, emergency lifting equipment, rescue, and medical equipment. Assists with traffic control as needed. Performs and/or compiles reports and records, forms, and other required administrative procedures. Engages in public information activities. Conducts station tours as needed. Works with Reserve Firefighters and Fire Explorers as needed. Ability to work flexible hours, emergency call backs, and extended hours. Ensures that a clean, safe, hazard-free work environment is maintained. Adheres to all company and department policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.
