Fire Systems Tech I

The Fire Systems Technician I is responsible for the testing of the Fire Alarms, Sprinkler systems and related equipment. This position performs corrective/preventative maintenance and inspections of the Life Safety Systems and equipment. She/he is the subject matter expert on Fire Alarms or Fire Suppression. She/he will maintain and perform testing and ensure the compliance is met. The Fire Systems Technician I will assist in maintaining the buildings to meet the standards and codes that are dictated by the state and local Fire Marshal, The Joint Commission and the Department of Health and Environment. Work Location: St.Vincent's Hospital- Indianapolis,IN Responsibilities Fire Alarm/Sprinkler Systems service and maintenance Maintain various types of fire suppression systems. Maintain various types of fire alarm systems. Assist in maintaining up-to-date as-built drawings for all life safety systems, including, fire suppression systems. Ensure fire alarms, automatic sprinkler systems; chemical extinguishing systems, fire/smoke dampers, meet the applicable local, State, NFPA associated codes, and Joint Commission Requirements for health care. Assist in the tracking of and ensure the completion of all applicable documentation that is required to be maintained at each facility by the authorities having jurisdiction. Assist all trades in any maintenance issues or situations that may arise. Organize and apply systems and procedures for life safety inspections and maintenance. Investigates life safety code compliance issues and performs follow-up communications, actions and documentation. Accompanies local and state fire inspectors during campus inspections. Issues deficiency notices to appropriate building or campus personnel. Keeps maintenance and inspection records on all emergency equipment. Performs some minor maintenance. Life Safety System Testing and Inspection Investigates life safety code compliance issues and performs follow-up communications, actions and documentation. Train facility staff on how to perform fire drills and assist if needed. Reports deficiencies after each inspection. (ADD) and performs follow up to ensure correction. Inspect and test all types of fire protection and prevention components such as; fire/smoke dampers, fire alarm systems, wet pipe sprinkler systems, dry pipe sprinkler systems, kitchen hood systems, etc. Perform required annual inspections on fire alarm systems and all associated components. Perform required annual, semi-annual and quarterly inspections on fire sprinkler systems, suppression systems, and related components. Perform annual fire extinguisher inspections. Perform fire wall visual inspections and 6 year fire/smoke damper inspections. Complete inspection documentation on Joint Commission formatted documents and NFPA documents. Provide completed documentation to facility and managers for record keeping. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent or at least five years’ experience in the field and/or applicable certification may be applied in lieu of High School Diploma or equivalent -required. High School Diploma or equivalent -preferred. License/Certification: Valid driver’s license. Must be able to be insured for driving company vehicles as -required. Local applicable certification for fire alarm or water-basedfire protection systems or National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level 1 certification in Fire Protection Engineering, Inspecting and Testing of Water Based Fire Suppression Systems or Fire Alarm Systems  National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level 1 certification in Fire Protection Engineering, Inspecting and Testing of Water Based Fire Suppression Systems or Fire Alarm Systems -preferred. Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience in fire/smoke suppression, detection and containment systems -required. Previous experience in healthcare -preferred. Experience with testing and inspections of fire/smoke suppression, detection and containment systems -preferred. Competencies Have a working knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and life safety requirements. Must have working knowledge of hazardous materials standards. Professionalism: Interacts with others in a tactful manner; remains calm under pressure; treats others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position; follows through on commitments. Quality: Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; seek ways to improve and promote quality. Computer skills: Has understanding and experience with the use of basic Windows program and Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Word and Outlook Email. Knowledge of instrumentation troubleshooting and preventative maintenance is required. Knowledge of current facility code and regulatory requirements for fire/smoke suppression, detection and containment systems is required. Superb communication skills for employee interactions such as, providing directions, training, feedback, etc. are required. Strong analytical abilities for understanding and interpreting building system documents, prints and layouts are required. Ability to operate tools and equipment with a skill level that is typically acquired through trade and/or vocational schools. #MFMBM
