Financial Controls Accountant

My client, a leading financial services firm, are looking for a Financial Controls Accountant to join their Central Liverpool head office.

This role is perfect for someone who is passionate about financial integrity, eager to develop their expertise, and ready to make a meaningful impact within a supportive and knowledgeable environment.

As part of a cross-functional hub of control-based experts, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring robust financial controls, supporting regulatory compliance, and driving a culture of risk awareness across the business.

The position offers significant exposure to senior stakeholders, providing an excellent platform for professional growth and future career advancement.

What you'll do:

Partner closely with process and control owners to ensure the design and operation of a robust financial control framework that effectively mitigates material financial reporting risks and fraud while ensuring full compliance with relevant regulatory standards. Provide insightful advice and constructive challenge during the development of new processes and controls within operational teams, ensuring that all identified risks are appropriately addressed through effective mitigation strategies. Report regularly to local Financial Controllers on the efficacy of the financial control environment, identifying any deficiencies and ensuring they are resolved in a timely, sustainable manner. Conduct thorough control validation activities using a risk-based approach, delivering high-quality documentation with clear conclusions that support ongoing assurance efforts. Oversee the maintenance of process documentation by line managers in accordance with established expectations, ensuring accuracy and completeness at all times. Drive effective remediation of process and control deficiencies by coordinating required actions and promoting compensatory behaviours that safeguard against material risks. Undertake periodic risk refreshes and deep dives into business processes to confirm that the financial control framework remains compliant, proportionate, and efficiently maintained. Leverage key management information from multiple sources—including incidents, assurance reports, and project updates—to gain a comprehensive understanding of operational risks impacting process performance. Collaborate proactively with business partners during change programmes to maintain or enhance the strength of the financial control environment throughout periods of transformation. Engage constructively with internal risk functions, internal audit teams, and external auditors to ensure alignment on assurance requirements and foster transparent communication.

What you bring:

Qualified Accountant (ACA or similar) Demonstrated expertise in risk assessment and control frameworks within complex organisational settings is essential for this position. A recognised accounting qualification or substantial experience as an internal or external auditor—ideally within financial or insurance services—will enable you to excel in this role. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are required so you can convey technical concepts clearly to both finance professionals and non-specialist stakeholders alike. Proven ability to build dependable relationships with colleagues at all levels ensures effective collaboration across departments. Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end financial processes—including reporting systems—and confidence in challenging performance or recommending improvements is vital. Strong analytical skills allow you to interpret complex data sets accurately while developing practical solutions for enhancing controls or addressing deficiencies. Experience providing technical guidance on controls implementation supports your capacity to influence process owners positively. Sound judgement combined with pragmatism enables you to balance enforcement of rigorous standards with realistic business needs when making recommendations. Previous involvement in managing or mentoring junior team members would be advantageous as there may be opportunities for people management responsibility.
