Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking an experienced Fiber Optic Inspector to join our growing team in support of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in the Arlington, VA area.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

Inspect, verify, and document fiber optic installations (aerial, underground, and intra-facility)Perform QA/QC inspections, reviewing workmanship, and validating test resultsConduct fiber optic installation and inspectionExecute fusion and mechanical splicing, and connector terminations (SC/APC, LC/UPC, MPO, etc.)Under minimal direction, rely on extensive experience and independent judgment to plan and accomplish goalsSet own project deadlines and manage time effectivelyProvide on-the-job training to new employees and mentor junior team membersMonitor conformance to quality, performance, specifications, and/or code requirements by performing inspection dutiesPerform daily field inspections and maintain detailed inspection recordsParticipate in punch lists, testing, and commissioning activitiesTrack quality assurance progress and report findings to project managersProvide input to documentation for area and equipment turnoverCollaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project milestones are metTroubleshoot and resolve complex fiber optic issues in the fieldDevelop and implement standard operating procedures for fiber optic inspectionsEnsure compliance with all safety protocols and regulations during field operationsPrepare comprehensive reports on inspection findings and recommend corrective actionsStay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies in fiber optics

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

HS Diploma/GED plus 8 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or educationDue to the projects associated with the position a US Citizenship is requiredProficient in OLTS Testing, OTDR testing, power meter/light source testing, and use of visual fault locatorsAbility to read and interpret fiber design drawings, schematics, splice plans, and cable management recordsFamiliar with fiber types (single-mode, multi-mode, loose tube, ribbon, and micro duct) and installation standards (TIA/EIA, ANSI, NEC, NFPA 130)Able to work night shifts occasionally, as required, with the possibility of weekend work

Preferred Qualifications: 

Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent certificationKnowledge of WMATA fiber plant standards or similar large-scale municipal/transit network environments Experience with air-blown fiber (ABF) system installation, troubleshooting, and maintenanceBICSI Technician (TECH) certification BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification OSHA 10/30 certification and confined space or lift training Excellent attention to detail and commitment to workmanship standardsStrong communication, documentation, and reporting abilitiesAbility to work independently or collaboratively across multiple shifts and field environmentsProactive in identifying and resolving discrepancies during installation, testing, or inspectionPhysically able to work in vaults, manholes, tunnels, or aerial environments as required
