About This Position: Differs from Ferryboat Deckhand 3 by the presence of a serving as an apprentice operator aboard a ferry vessel. Differs from Ferryboat Operator 2 by the absence of experienced operator duties aboard a ferry vessel. Able-Bodied Seaman (AB) 2. Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) NOTE: Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) will be required at the time of appointment. Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties: 50% Trains in piloting U.S. Coast Guard-inspected ferry vessels that are used to carry vehicles and passengers. Trains in proper procedures for completing master log of all operations and submission of required reports. Trains in inspection of equipment, machines, rigging, and gear aboard vessels. Trains in proper procedure for exercising all emergency fire and collision drills. Trains in operation and proper usage of ferry vessel equipment such as marine radio, state radio, radar, and related safety equipment. Trains and assists in the operation and routine maintenance of an engine room and machinery aboard a ferry vessel such as main propulsion diesel engines, main electrical generating plants, hydraulic systems, sanitation systems and pumping systems. Trains and assists in maintaining required engine room logs and in making reports. Trains and assists in safe refueling operations. 50% Assist Deck Crew as needed. May serve as lookout to ensure safe navigation of the ferry vessel.
