Job Duties and Other Information The overall function of this position is to become competent to operate and pilot state-owned ferry vessels under United States Coast Guard regulation through satisfactory completion of training, performance measures, and documented experience. This position is located in the District 07 Unit 870 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to a Ferryboat Operations Supervisor. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives. As a Ferryboat Operator 1, 2 or 3, you'll help create a positive first impression for every person who enters the ferry. In this role, you will: + Trains under the guidance and supervision of a Ferryboat Operations Supervisor to operate and pilot ferry motor vessels carrying passengers on waterways. + Maintains operating logs and submits various reports on a regular basis. + Satisfactorily completes all training and performance measures to obtain the necessary experience and USCG credentials to qualify as a Ferryboat Operations Supervisor. + Leads and conducts fire and collision drills and participates in those drills on a bi-weekly schedule. + Functionally supervises the crew on an assigned shift by issuing work assignments and reviewing work products.
