Position Summary:
The University at Buffalo’s Office of Residential Maintenance Services (https://www.buffalo.edu/campusliving/for-current-students/maintenance.html) is seeking a candidate to fill the Facility Operations Assistant 1 position. In this role, you will work with a team of dynamic and diverse individuals and ensure that structures and equipment are installed correctly, properly maintained and repaired as needed across UB’s North and South campuses. All the Student Life trades, and custodial staff work within UB’s residential halls and apartments.
In a typical year, Campus Living houses up to 7,500 students at UB. Our skilled trades and custodial staff care for the buildings our students live in. Our priority is the health and safety of our students. Without dedicated cleaners and maintenance staff, the university would not be able to have a residential program.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities
+ Performs routine and unskilled work such as carrying supplies, equipment, erecting ladders and scaffolding, cleaning, flushing and repairing gutters and drains, removing materials from construction sites, preparing surfaces and spreading paint, digging ditches, loading and unloading trucks, carrying bricks and mortar, performing rough carpentry and masonry work, and cleaning the work site after repair work is completed.
+ Operates self-propelled and motorized equipment, such as pressure washers, compressors, light construction equipment, electric forklifts, and snow removal equipment.
+ Inspects, checks and patrols areas to detect vandalism or non-adherence to safety procedures, reports defects, possible hazards or potentially dangerous conditions in the building and adjacent areas.
+ Performs a variety of routine building maintenance tasks such as unclogging toilets and sinks and changing light bulbs and tubes.
+ May lead students, assigned to work crews by making assignments, distributing and accounting for equipment and supplies, demonstrating the proper methods of completing work, and supervising the on-site performance of activities and tasks.
+ Performs general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, raking or, cutting brush and wood, trimming and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, and removing snow, trash and other obstructions from the building and surrounding areas. Loads trucks with debris, dirt and other materials.
+ May travel to other offices and warehousing areas within the facility to pick-up or move equipment and supplies.
+ Move furniture, equipment for office moves, conferences, meetings, and special events.
+ Operate a hand truck, forklift or pallet jack.
+ Maintains storage areas, tracks and records package movement within a facility
+ Assists truck drivers and motor vehicle operators in picking up and delivering items. May drive delivery vehicles.
+ Assists in the receiving and shipping of various office materials.
