The Financial Institutions Executive Underwriter will be focused on insurance companies, banks, depository institutions, asset managers, registered investment advisors, hedge funds, private equity firms, venture capital funds and the like. You will work independently on all but the most complex or exceptional accounts (with required process oversight), underwriting within delegated authority and making data‑driven accept/decline and pricing decisions. In North America, this often means leading on complex accounts for clients with heightened regulatory, operational or litigation exposure. This role suits an experienced underwriter who combines technical FI knowledge, commercial instinct and strong broker relationships—someone who wants autonomy, influence and the chance to shape underwriting growth and profitability results for financial institutions.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Underwrite Financial Institutions risks (D&O, Fiduciary, EPLI and related financial lines) for a portfolio of wholesale and retail brokers and clients, exercising authority to price and bind business.Manage a book of business that includes community, regional and national institutions as well as specialty financial firms, focusing on accounts that are complex, multi‑jurisdictional or large in individual line size.Use analytical rigor and portfolio data to assess risk, set pricing and monitor aggregate exposures (concentration, correlated liabilities, sector trends).Maintain and grow strategic relationships with senior brokers, agents and distribution partners who specialize in financial institutions placements.Provide detailed technical placement guidance and clearly articulate critical coverage differences and exclusions relevant to financial institutions (e.g., regulatory investigations, enforcement exposures, client asset claims, ERISA/fiduciary matters).Contribute high‑value input to underwriting and marketing plans using advanced portfolio insights and predictive analytics.Partner closely with Claims, Actuarial, Legal and Directors of Underwriting to shape terms, influence reserving and refine appetite across the FI franchise.Participate in cross‑functional projects to streamline underwriting processes, improve submission workflows and deliver product enhancements.Stay current on key legal decisions, regulatory developments and industry guidance affecting financial institutions (SEC/FINRA actions, FDIC/OCC guidance, Dodd‑Frank implications, pension fiduciary rulings) and translate that knowledge into actionable underwriting positions.Share expertise externally (broker briefings, market events, thought leadership) and internally through mentoring, coaching and training for underwriters and underwriting support teams.

 

Qualifications Degree in Business or equivalent typically requiredA minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related business experienceRPLU or professional insurance designation preferredProven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibilityDemonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposesDemonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholdersMust demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issuesProven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business About Us

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
