Summary :
The Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CDHH) is a state agency committed to improving the quality of life for Idahoans who are deaf or hard of hearing. We serve as advocates, share vital information, and work to expand and improve access to services statewide.
Job Description:
CDHH is seeking a qualified and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to join our team. This role is responsible for providing high-level English/American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services, including designated interpreting for the deaf Executive Director and other deaf staff. The position requires flexibility and professionalism, as it involves interpreting in a wide variety of settings and frequent travel.
This position requires both in-state and out of state travel.
Example of Duties:
Typical Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
+ Interpret in professional environments such as: Legislative hearings and government meetings, board and council sessions, and public presentations and workshops
+ Facilitate communication as a cross-cultural mediator between hearing and deaf communities
+ Advocate on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing individuals
+ Organize and participate in workshops/trainings related to interpreting and deaf culture
+ Ensure adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct
+ Work in interpreting teams and coordinate scheduling and substitute interpreters
+ Create and edit video content for the CDHH website and social media platforms
+ Manage interpreter certification testing site and proctor exams
+ Perform additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Demonstrated experience interpreting in professional settings (e.g., legislative or governmental proceedings)
+ Fluency in English and American Sign Language (ASL)
+ Skilled in sign-to-voice interpretation for deaf professionals
+ Deep understanding of Deaf culture and ASL linguistic elements
+ Ability to interpret accurately, effectively, and impartially, including in specialized contexts
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Must meet the licensure requirements outlined in Idaho Statute Title 54-2916A - Speech and Hearing Services Practice Act.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master's degree
+ National Certification recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
Travel: Frequent in-state and out of state travel, with overnight stays, is required.
