Job Title Equipment Technician Specialist Agency Texas A&M University - San Antonio Department Department of Natural Sciences Proposed Minimum Salary Commensurate Job Location San Antonio, Texas Job Type Staff Job Description The Department of Natural Sciences at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) invites applications for a part-time Equipment Technician Specialist. The equipment technician specialist, under general supervision, coordinates the use of laboratory facilities and supervises the physical operation of technical equipment, tools, and machinery. The position widely supports the daily operations, maintenance, and long-term planning of teaching and research laboratories within the Department of Natural Sciences. This role ensures that lab equipment functions efficiently and safely, that facility-related issues are addressed promptly, and that faculty and staff receive expert guidance on equipment selection, usage, and lab space design. By troubleshooting issues, maintaining safety standards, coordinating with Facilities, and supporting future planning efforts, the technician plays a vital role in keeping instructional and research spaces functional, safe, and well-equipped. The Department of Natural Sciences aims to provide the best possible educational experiences in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, and Water Resources Sciences & Technology. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students for entry into the workplace or advanced degree programs. We value hands-on, interdisciplinary experiences to provide a broad perspective in the natural sciences. We have 11 teaching laboratory spaces and 11 research laboratories, each with supporting equipment rooms. Responsibilities: + Troubleshoot and repair teaching and research lab equipment within scope of expertise. + Receive, set up, and help relocate laboratory equipment. + Recommend efficient use of lab space for equipment placement and function. + Maintain safety inspection logs for lab equipment (e.g., fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, fire extinguishers) + Maintain and troubleshoot specialized lab computers not managed by campus IT. + Assist with minor repairs that fall outside Facilities’ responsibilities to reduce service costs. + Monitor and follow up on Facilities work orders for accuracy and timely completion. + Address issues such as DI water supply and emergency generator problems. + Advise faculty on appropriate lab equipment with consideration of space and efficiency. + Share technical expertise and guidance with lab personnel. + Recommend vendors offering reliable instrumentation and technical support. + Assist new research faculty with lab layout and space planning. + Contribute to design and planning of lab spaces in future science building projects. + May be asked to provide technical support to other areas within the College of Arts and Sciences. Required Education & Experience: + Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or higher in related field. + Five (5) years of related experience in an instructional environment. Preferred Education and Experience: + Six (6) years of related experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: + Ability to complete tasks and work cooperatively with others. + Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently. + Ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
