Environmental Scientist - Red Dog Mine, AK - Rotational

**Job Description**
The Environmental Scientist supports all aspects of the environmental program for Kuna Engineering and its clients throughout Alaska. The position will support clients on planning and executing environmental projects including studies, permitting, reporting, field work and regulatory compliance as necessary. Support may also be managing field programs and team logistics according to project requirements. The Environmental Scientist shall work with the Environmental Director to plan schedules and other activities related to projects as assigned.
Duties of the role can be adapted to fit your experience. Some of our current workload requires additional help in:
+ Supporting the preparation of environmental compliance documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), including Initial Studies, Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, and exemptions/exclusions.
+ Supporting desktop and field technical reports to complete the environmental process (i.e. wetlands delineations, bird surveys, water quality sampling)
+ Supporting water resources, including sampling, modeling, design, and management activities
+ Supporting preparation of environmental permit applications with various federal, state, and local agencies for a variety of project types/sizes.
+ Assisting with preparation of various constraints analyses, environmental plans, and strategies required for construction and planning projects.
+ Assisting with various environmental surveys and reporting.

**Responsibilities**
+ Develop scopes of work for environmental baseline studies (e.g., water quality, hydrology, soil, vegetation,wildlife, wetlands, air quality, archaeology) at RDO, along the DMTS and the Port, and at potential cleanwater diversion and other water discharge outfall locations and downstream mixing zone areas. Thisincludes engaging with site and client personnel to identify existing environmental monitoring and studies thatwould meet the intent of baseline studies.
+ Develop and implement sampling protocols in accordance with relevant environmental regulations such asCWA, CAA, ADNR, ADEC, and APDES.
+ Manage subcontractors and field logistics, including travel, safety planning, and equipment procurement.
+ Ensure quality assurance and control (QA/QC) of field data and deliverables.
+ Support analyzing and interpret environmental data to ensure it meets the requirements for NEPA andpermitting submissions in coordination with the Teck SERA and Permitting Leads.
+ Support the SERA and Permitting Leads with preparation technical reports and documentation forpermit applications and NEPA review documents, including Environmental Assessments (EAs) andEnvironmental Impact Statements (EISs).
+ Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, planners, and GIS specialists to inform thebaseline field studies program scope.
+ Prepare materials for internal technical working group discussions and to support decision making onprogram / study scopes.
+ Prepare materials for community and regulator engagements to support permitting, compliance, and publicreviews.
+ Other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**
+ Degree in environmental sciences, engineering, chemistry, natural resource management, or related field.
+ No minimum years of direct experience.
+ Preference five (5) years of directly related experience.
+ Experience performing field work and developing project plans and subsequent reports.
+ Ability to adapt to and maintain a safety conscious work environment.

**Working Conditions and Physical Requirements**
_Weather:_ Indoors/outdoors
_Noise level:_ The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office.
_Description of environment:_ Frequent exposure to moderate to harsh weather conditions. Requires work to be done both inside and out.
_Physical requirements:_ Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
_Travel:_ Travel required up to 50 percent of the time. Employee will travel to remote areas and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes and ATVs.
