Environmental Risk Director
The position’s purpose is to support the commercial lending and business banking approval process/risk management function within Corporate Credit related to transactions secured by real estate. The overall objective of this position is to provide separate and independent Environmental risk management for the real estate due diligence process consistent with applicable regulatory and Eastern Bank policy. The Director will manage a team of environmental risk officers and is responsible for the leadership, vendor management and overall direction of the ESA report ordering and review functions. The incumbent possesses an in depth knowledge of Environmental due diligence and commercial real estate principles. They will formulate, recommend, and direct the implementation of both the strategy and policy of a high-volume department. The Director establishes performance standards to ensure superior customer service. This position provides guidance to team members on complex transactions and makes risk based decisions and recommendations to senior management, as needed. **Major Responsibilities:** + **Attain goals and business plan initiatives** related to production, service standards, compliance, and risk management. Provide leadershipfor the overall delivery of environmental due diligence for lending purposes and oversee workflow to ensure a responsive, timely and appropriate level of service consistent with bank policy. Manage team’s workflow for parity and efficiency. + **Partner with internal stakeholders** and energize others to work toward accomplishing strategic organizational objectives. This position will provide ongoing input into process improvements and vendor selection to mitigate potential losses. Advise senior management on complex environmental issues and market trends, as needed. + **Communication** with lending teams to ensure and enhance quality workflow and understanding of environmental due diligence requirements. Ability to apply risk management techniques to achieve resolutions for loan closings while protecting the bank’s interests. Communication and recommendations to senior management may also be required to ensure environmental concerns are understood and sufficiently mitigated. Provide reporting to management, as needed. + **Coaching and development** manage a team of envriomental risk officers to ensure a high performing team for multi-state banking organization. Provide coaching, educational, and career development opportunities to team. + **Monitor regulatory updates** , participate in industry events to ensure best practices, and provide annual or interim policy updates to Credit Committee. + **Training** : Coordinate and conduct training for Commercial and Business Banking lending teams to ensure understanding of the Bank’s environmental policy. + **Training** : Coordinate and conduct training for Commercial and Business Banking lending teams to ensure understanding of the Bank’s environmental policy. + Vendor Management: Supervision of environmental vendor qualifications, on-boarding of new vendors and maintenance of vendor rosters **REQUIREMENTS** **:** **Education and Experience** + A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences is required. Advanced degree preferred. + 10+ years of environmental related experience in Environmental Remediation/Phase One development/review. + 5+ years of experience at a financial institution with strong understanding of lending secured by real property. + Prior management/leadership experience **Skills/Knowledge** + In-depth knowledgeable in ASTM Standards, Mass DEP & NH DES environmental regulations. + Ability to obtain and educate on environmental requirements / regulation in other geographies to meet needs, as the Bank grows. + Bank and Environmental experience in the preparation or the review of Phase I / Phase II reports. + Environmental Professional (as defined by US EPA) + Proficiency in standard MS Office products (Excel/Word) + Strong written and verbal communication skills including ability to discuss complex environmental matters with groups having varying degrees of environmental risk background and expertise. **WORK ENVIRONMENT** Persons holding this position are generally subject to inside environmental conditions having the lighting, temperature, and noise level of an open floor-plan office environment (moderate, but occasionally loud at times). This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
