Duties Description The Environmental Education Assistant 1 will, under the direction of the Region 5 Hunter Education Program (HEP) Coordinator, assist in the duties and responsibilities of this program. These include recruiting, coordinating, and equipping volunteer instructors, maintaining accurate inventories of equipment and classroom materials, assisting with the teaching of basic and advanced courses in hunting and trapping, scheduling classes and coordinating logistics, database management, assisting with the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) and Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) Program, participating on the statewide HEP team, and providing administrative support. Additionally, this position will assist the regional bear biologist with the implementation of the BearWise Program in Adirondack Park. These responsibilities will involve engaging local communities to provide information on black bear ecology and management and deliver key messaging and technical assistance on resolving negative human-bear interactions.
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have one year of experience in environmental education programs; or one year college study with specialization in natural science, natural resources, or environmental education.The preferred candidate will have strong communication, outreach, teaching, and organizational skills, excellent attention to detail and interest in wildlife management, including hunting, trapping, and/or archery. Experience using MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and databases preferred. Will be required to speak in public, assist with developing educational materials, and work effectively as part of a team.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Travel may be required.Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.Weekends and holidays may be required.
