Coordinator, Environmental Engineering, Covington, VA (LAB TECH)
Opportunity
Under the direction of the Lab Supervisor, the Lab Technician is responsible for enabling the mill to meet quality and environmental compliance. The Lab Technician also will assist production personnel with quality assurance routine testing and diagnostic investigations by performing analytical tests on raw materials, intermediate materials, finished products wastewater, and wastes. In this position you will perform various sample collection, testing, and inspections in a mill setting.
Required Qualifications
Associate degree in Chemistry or other related science field, or at least two years’ experience in an industrial setting collecting samples and conducting analytical tests.Ability to work at heights, climb stairs and ladders, and bend or stoop in varying weather conditions. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.Proficient computer skills (including MS Office, most importantly Excel and Microsoft Word).Willing and able to walk and work in an industrial location indoors or outdoors, including walking up and down steps and ladders with all safety equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc.)Must have current driver’s license. The Laboratory Technician will perform the following work functions:
Collecting routine samples in an industrial setting, such as the following:WastewaterStormwaterRaw materials (chips, wood, cooking chemicals)Intermediate products (paper cooking liquors, chemical additives)Finished product (Paper/paperboard, turpentine)Wastes (ash, spilled materials, unknown waste for RCRA characterization)Perform analyses using instruments at the onsite laboratory. Analysis includes bacterial testing, and other internal process analyses using HPLC Chromatography. Identify fiber species and contaminants in paperboard by using a microscope and other diagnostic tests. Ensuring that laboratory instruments have proper preventative maintenance and care.Performing routine inspections in mill environment.Be able to perform biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), nutrients, & pH testing, and other internal sampling or testing that might be necessary for understanding mill wastewater performancePreparing samples and shipping papers including hazmat for sample transport to offsite laboratoriesEntering analytical results in a database or spreadsheet for reporting; perform data analysisMaintain proper housekeeping in the laboratoryMaintaining adequate laboratory chemical inventory.Adherence to all mill safety rules, participates in safety programs and meetingsWeekend and holiday duty. Report approximately every fifth week on weekends and holidays. While on call duty, check for permit deviations, perform basic CEMs calibrations, conduct laboratory sampling and analysis, and respond accordingly. Be able to work overtime as needed. Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
