Engineering Manager (Operations & Communications Platform)

About the Platform Team:

As an Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in shaping the future of our Operations and Communications Platform squads within the Platform Tribe. You’ll provide engineering leadership and, when needed, hands-on technical contributions to strengthen our CRM infrastructure. This role is based in our Berlin office.

Your mission will be to empower developers to work more productively and efficiently by setting clear engineering baselines, championing best practices, and driving the adoption of AI tools that enhance software development.

Operations Platform: You will lead the evolution of our new backoffice system, Hive, extending its functionality to help internal users and diverse personas (such as Support and Onboarding agents) become more effective. This includes piloting and scaling AI assistants, developing dynamic UIs, and building smarter search capabilities that improve day-to-day efficiency.

Communications Platform: You will focus on strengthening our communications infrastructure by reducing single-vendor dependencies, scaling our APIs, unlocking new rich communication channels (e.g., RCS), while also ensuring reliability, preventing incidents, and reinforcing safeguards against attacks and fraud attempts across our customer-facing channels. Additionally, you will drive the development of a Recommendations Engine that powers cross- and upselling promotions across multiple channels, with a focus on inside and field sales.

What you’ll do:

Lead the Operations Platform and Communications Platform squads, driving strategy, execution, and team development. Build human-centered AI solutions that empower software engineers and internal back-office users by reducing complexity, improving efficiency, and enhancing user experience. Collaborate with engineering teams across SumUp to design and integrate internal admin APIs that automate processes and streamline workflows. Partner with the Data Platform teams to create a scalable and reliable data architecture that supports all operational data needs. Oversee the development of dynamic, persona-driven user interfaces for internal tooling, ensuring intuitive and effective experiences for diverse stakeholder groups. Drive adoption of platform solutions across SumUp engineering, setting baselines and promoting best practices to ensure consistency, reliability, and efficiency. Champion the adoption of AI tools in software development, fostering innovation and productivity within engineering teams. You’ll be great for this role if you have:

6+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years of hands-on technical leadership and experience leading cross-functional teams Experience in system and API design, particularly within microservice architectures, preferably in Go programming Experience leveraging AI to empower developers and internal users, with the ability to make pragmatic build vs. buy decisions and manage vendor relationships effectively Strong expertise in working with large-scale backend systems, distributed systems, and message-based communication between services Proficiency in deploying applications to Kubernetes or equivalent cloud-based solutions Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences A founder’s mentality: motivated, proactive, and driven to innovate and push boundaries A growth mindset: humble, curious, open to feedback, and eager to learn continuously
