The Engineering Manager for Developer Productivity and Automation, within the Global eXperience Technology organization, contributes to Starbucks’ success by leading a team of platform engineers supporting our Developer Experience and GenAI Enablement initiatives. This role leads teams that build and operate AI-powered developer and platform capabilities, with a strong emphasis on production readiness, security, observability, reliability, and platform integration. The successful candidate brings clarity to complex technology initiatives, thrives in ambiguous and emerging domains, and consistently translates technical investment into measurable business value. Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following: + Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results. + Defines and drives the technical vision and roadmap for AI-powered developer tools and agent development across Starbucks by partnering closely with engineering teams to understand workflows, identify high-impact opportunities, and drive adoption of new DevAI capabilities. + Leads teams that design, build, deploy, and operate AI-powered developer and platform capabilities with a strong emphasis on production readiness, reliability, security, observability, and platform integration. + Spearheads the design, development, and deployment of AI agents and tools that address Starbucks’ engineering challenges, including but not limited to: + Advanced, context-aware code generation, completion, and refactorin + AI-powered event triage, root cause analysis, and bug remediation + Intelligent agents that optimize and augment testing, simulation, and validation workflows + Evaluates and integrates state-of-the-art agentic AI platforms and frameworks, ensuring solutions meet enterprise standards for scalability, security, and maintainability. + Stays current on advancements in large language models (LLMs), generative AI, and agent architectures, and applies these advancements to solve real-world engineering problems. + Establishes and enforces observability standards for AI agents, APIs, and platform services, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and incident response. + Ensures AI agents and platform services integrate with enterprise identity and access management systems and defines patterns for authentication, authorization, secrets management, and least-privilege access. + Leads initiatives that improve developer productivity across CI/CD pipelines and build tooling, including systems such as GitHub and Jenkins. + Develops and implements engineering solutions that improve efficiency, increase capacity, and reduce operational costs. + Applies structured problem-solving and analysis to assess technical, financial, and operational trade-offs and makes informed recommendations. + Provides coaching and mentoring to engineering partners and fosters a culture of technical excellence and operational ownership. + Establishes strong cross-functional relationships with business, security, infrastructure, and technology partners. + Communicates highly complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders. + Supports development teams and resolves developer issues in a timely and accurate manner. + Ensures application and infrastructure architectures are stable, secure, compliant, and aligned with company standards and practices. + Partners with external vendors to support and evolve developer tooling and platform capabilities. Basic Qualifications + 4–8 years of professional software development experience. + Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience. + Demonstrates understanding of software development lifecycles, developer workflows, and modern engineering practices. + Has experience leading advocacy, enablement, or training programs that drive adoption of new technologies within large engineering organizations. Preferred Qualifications + 5+ years of experience managing medium- to large-scale initiatives and leading cross-functional teams. + 5+ years of experience with one or more of the following languages: Python, Go, Java, C#, and/or Ruby. + 3+ years of experience designing, building, or operating large-scale distributed systems and client-server architectures. + 3+ years of experience with service resiliency, observability, and operational readiness for applications and platforms. + Demonstrates familiarity with modern AI architectures and techniques, including prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). + Has experience designing or operating agentic AI systems, including multi-agent architectures and orchestration frameworks. + Shows passion for improving developer experience and advancing AI-assisted software development. + Experience with cloud computing platforms such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. + Knowledge and understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., SOX, PCI, data protection). + Demonstrated experience implementing and managing high-capacity, mission-critical environments. + Experience with agent development and automation tools such as Amazon AgentCore, LangGraph, or n8n.
