Engineering Intern 1 - Master/Ph.D. Level (Summer 2026)

Applied Research Associates has an ideal opportunity for a college student pursuing a graduate engineering degree to gain real-world engineering experience at the Southwest Division in Albuquerque, NM. Summer interns will have the opportunity to work with the Computational Physics Group. The Computational Physics Group develops code and performs computational analysis for large Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The successful applicant will assist with data analysis to better understand low level repeated blast exposure during training. The applicant will also learn to perform CFD computer simulations on local computing clusters to support the development and use of these computer codes for a variety of applications such as air blast, shock tubes, explosive detonations, explosive fill analysis, reactive materials.

He/she will work with a team of highly skilled engineers and scientists that leverage multidisciplinary backgrounds to provide innovative solutions to our customers. The programs impact national security and Department of Defense (DoD) mission areas. Opportunities include work in areas such as conventional weapon effects, air blast injury, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), hypersonics, and coupled fluid/structure interaction.

Assist in preparing information and research published papers Analyzing results and making comparisons with experimental data Create and update PowerPoint presentations Collect and process data Setup and run computational fluid dynamics simulations Programming/Scripting

Education Requirements:

B.S. in physics or engineering (mechanical, chemical or aerospace) GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 for all degrees earned

Preferred:

Programming skills including Python, C++, MatLab, Fortran Working on Unix/Linux operating systems
