What’s the purpose of this role? 

 

The Platform Management Engineer role is responsible for ensuring reliable, secure, and automation-driven operations of the Microsoft 365 / Office 365 platform. This position combines platform engineering, operational discipline, and governance-aligned decision-making to support tenant health, license lifecycle management, and controlled administrative operations.

 

Your day-to-day 

 

Automation-First Platform Operations

Design, build, and maintain automation to support core O365 tenant operationsEnsure automated workflows for tenant maintenance, configuration controls, and health monitoringDrive consistency and repeatability of operational tasks through engineering rather than manual execution

 

License Provisioning & Lifecycle Governance

Operate and optimize license assignment and removal processes across the Microsoft 365 ecosystemImplement lifecycle controls that ensure compliance, cost optimization, and operational continuityManage governance-aware exception handling for specific scenarios (e.g., onboarding continuity, operational emergencies)

 

Controlled Tenant Administration

Perform privileged admin actions in a justified, documented, and least-privilege mannerSupport engineering activities in non-production tenants, including testing, validation, and automation developmentMaintain clear rationale and records for escalated privileges to ensure full transparency and governance adherence

 

Engineering-Driven Platform Support

Troubleshoot platform-level issues and collaborate across teams to identify root causesConvert recurring operational issues into engineering fixes (automation, configuration hardening, control improvements)Provide guidance to dependent teams on platform capabilities, limitations, and recommended patterns

 

Stakeholder Alignment & Governance Compliance

Communicate platform impacts, risks, and constraints clearly to service managers, architects, and product ownersEnsure operational decisions align with security policies, governance models, and platform roadmapsMaintain alignment with strategic platform direction and operational realities

 

Documentation, Runbook Quality & Control Hygiene

Create and maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks, and automated workflow descriptionsEnsure platform operations do not rely on tribal knowledge by maintaining structured documentationCapture rationale for privileged actions and exceptions to maintain auditability and governance integrity

 

What is needed to succeed in this Role? 

 

Proven O365 / M365 Platform Engineering Experience

Hands-on experience administering Microsoft 365 / Office 365 services in an enterprise environmentStrong understanding of tenant-level operations beyond end-user supportDemonstrated ownership of platform reliability, readiness, security, and governance outcomes

 

Automation and Engineering-First Operations Mindset

Experience designing and maintaining automation supporting O365 tenant operations and license lifecycle managementStrong scripting skills (PowerShell required; bonus for Azure Automation, Graph API, GitHub workflows, etc.)Ability to translate operations requirements into repeatable, scalable engineering solutions

 

Identity, Access, and Governance Expertise

Understanding of enterprise IAM concepts: RBAC, groups, admin roles, conditional access, approval flows, SoDAbility to work within strict privilege boundaries while delivering operational outcomesExperience operating in environments with rigorous oversight of administrative actions

 

Operational Troubleshooting & Escalation Discipline

Ability to diagnose platform issues using evidence-based methods (telemetry, logs, admin portals, automation output)Skilled in collaborating with engineering, identity, networking, or security teams to resolve systemic issuesClear communicator capable of breaking down technical constraints for business and non-technical stakeholders

 

Documentation, Control, and Process Hygiene

Produce high-quality operational documentation, runbooks, and exception logsEnsure all privileged or exception workflows are justified, recorded, and compliant with governance standardsMaintain transparency around the why behind operational decisions
