System One is partnering with our client in search of a Substation Engineer. Join a dynamic team, where you will leverage your expertise to design and optimize the physical layouts of substations in compliance with essential industry standards such as RUS Bulletins, NESC, NEC, ANSI, and IEEE. In this role, you will play a critical part in developing specifications and materials contracts, ensuring safe and reliable electricity service for our community.
Essential Functions: Collaborate on the physical design of new substations and the maintenance redesign of existing structures under moderate supervision. Develop comprehensive project scopes, conceptual designs, one-line diagrams, and accurate cost estimates for substation projects. Assist in the preparation and application of specifications, codes, and standards to ensure compliance and quality. Execute CAD drafting tasks for substation designs and make necessary revisions to documentation as needed. Prepare and finalize record drawings from field "redline" notes for all assigned projects. Create effective grading plans for new and existing substations to facilitate proper drainage. Design Spill Prevention and Control Countermeasure (SPCC) plans for oil containment at each substation. Prepare a variety of essential substation drawings, including general layouts, electrical equipment plans, detailed bills of materials, grounding, conduit plans, and control building specifications. Generate complete and precise designs, specifications, and construction materials contracts for substation construction timely. Monitor material delivery timelines to ensure efficient substation construction. Review equipment manufacturer drawings for compliance and provide mentoring to less experienced engineers. Serve as a project lead for substation projects when directed by management. Conduct site visits to confirm as-built conditions for new and existing substations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Intermediate knowledge of substation layouts, grading plans, and spill prevention and containment protocols. Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, and ANSI standard codes, as well as RUS guidelines for substation design, especially physical clearance requirements. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to handle complex engineering design tasks. Excellent communication skills and the ability to build professional relationships with colleagues, vendors, and external stakeholders. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Experience and Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required. A minimum of four (4) to seven (7) years of relevant experience in engineering design. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license required; additional evaluations may apply based on job nature. Desire and willingness to work toward obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) Certification is preferred. Physical and Mental Demands: Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds and extended periods of sitting. Requires a high level of concentration and sound judgment to manage deadlines and complex situations effectively. Work Environment: Primarily an office environment with occasional fieldwork involving exposure to varying weather conditions. Position Type/Expected Work Hours: This is a full-time position, with occasional evening and weekend work required as job demands necessitate. Travel: Travel within the service territory is expected, with occasional out-of-state and overnight travel for training and professional development. EEO Statement:
