Role and Scope of Position:
The Engineer will focus on DER Gateway projects, enabling real-time monitoring and control of distributed energy resources through advanced technologies such as RTACs (Remote Terminal Automation Controllers). This role involves designing communication interfaces, analyzing system performance, and supporting integration with grid operations systems.

Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work and team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change, based on managerial discretion and work performance. All applicants must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change.

Electrical Engineer – Grid Operations Technology (DER Gateway Projects)

Join a team at the forefront of modern grid operations and distributed energy resource (DER) integration. As an Electrical Engineer in our Grid Operations Technology group, you will play a critical role in enabling real-time monitoring and control of DER sites through advanced gateway solutions. This position offers an opportunity to work on innovative projects that enhance grid reliability, flexibility, and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Design, configure, and implement DER Gateway systems leveraging RTACs (Remote Terminal Automation Controllers) for monitoring and control of distributed energy resources.

Develop and maintain communication interfaces using industry-standard protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEEE 2030.5.

Perform data analytics to assess system and device performance, identify trends, and recommend improvements for operational efficiency.

Collaborate with internal teams including Grid Operations, SCADA, and IT to ensure seamless integration of DER gateways into existing infrastructure.

Support testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of DER gateway deployments in the field.

Contribute to the development of technical standards, documentation, and best practices for DER integration.

Stay informed on emerging technologies and regulatory requirements impacting DER communications and grid modernization. 

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

Ability to independently develop, present and execute new projects through collaborations with other departments.

Strong understanding of power systems, grid operations, and DER technologies.

Hands-on experience with RTAC configuration, SCADA systems, and remote monitoring/control solutions.

Proficiency in communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEEE 2030.5) and networking fundamentals.

Background in data analytics, including the ability to interpret performance metrics and develop actionable insights.

Familiarity with cybersecurity principles for grid-connected devices.

Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Knowledge of regulatory standards and compliance requirements for DER integration is desirable.

Experience with Python or other scripting languages for automation and data analysis.

Understanding of distributed control systems, microgrids, and renewable energy technologies.

Project management experience, including vendor coordination and technical documentation.

Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; Master’s degree is a plus.

Experience:   

3-5 years related experience is required. Engineering design experience preferred.                     

Working Conditions:

Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.

Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.

Depending on the specific nature of the engineering role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car. A valid driver’s license is required.
