Responsible for the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process, and adhering to the standards of nursing practice.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1.  Utilizes the nursing process for the delivery and management of patient’s care from admission to discharge, appropriate to the developmental age and cultural diversity of the patient population.
2.  Performs patient assessment/reassessment according to nursing standards.
3.  Develops and coordinates individual plan of care including discharge planning and teaching.
4.  Directs, supervises, coordinates and evaluates nursing care within assigned clinical setting.
5.  Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level.
6.  Documents patient care according to nursing standards.
7.  Develops, implements/coordinates and documents educational plan for patient/family and significant other. 
8.  Ensures continuity of care through collaboration with other health care providers.
9.  Complies with legal and ethical aspects of patient care.
10. Assumes responsibility for professional growth including assuming resource and preceptor role when appropriate and serving as a role model in an area of specialty.
11. Maintains a safe environment.
12. Administers medications, performs treatments/therapies and operates equipment according to policy and procedure.  Assists physician with treatment and procedures and special tests as required or directed.
13. Participates in and supports Nursing Governance activities.
14. Differentiates and manages care of patient with acute and chronic pain.
15. Demonstrates a commitment to promote a positive work environment through positive work relations and effective communication.

2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

Core Competencies for the Endoscopy Center

1. Assist with upper and lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Procedures on adult patients.
2. Document necessary information on Ambulatory Procedure Nursing Record.
3. Care for patients undergoing procedures requiring moderation sedation. 


II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Currently registered by the Board of Registration in Nursing for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
2. BLS is a requirement for every RN unless an advance certification is current (ex ACLS, PALS, NRP). In addition, unit specific certification and competencies are defined in the Unit Profile.
Preferred:
1. BSN.
2. GI certification.

Required:
1. Strong interpersonal skills are required to gather information, build relationships that support collaborative work in the department and across the organization while providing exceptional service to patients.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered light. Position requires work indoors in patient care environment.
