**DESCRIPTION**
**Job Summary:**
This applied technology position creates and integrates electrical and electronic hardware that is essential to Cummins products. People in these positions will typically develop and validate electronic sensors, actuators, control units, harnesses, wiring practices, or control systems and associated analog and digital signals to ensure the consistent operation of Cummins' products in a variety of customer applications.
**Key Responsibilities:**
Investigates electronic hardware problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results Applies and improves the improvement of electronic hardware development processes and tools. Processes include, basic problem solving techniques, familiarity with hardware development process, and requirements analysis. Applies knowledge of design methods such as worst case analysis, circuit simulation, DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), schematic capture, Specification Compliance Matrix (or equivalent). Obtains input and collaborates with electronic suppliers and delivers prototype hardware to application engineering teams. Makes decisions in the areas of hardware requirements, design, validation test that impact unit cost, functionality, and prototype delivery. Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers’ work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team. Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role. Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Competencies:**
Design and Application of Mechatronics Systems - Specifies electronic hardware and interconnections that measure and control systems; applies electronic hardware and interconnections in Cummins' products.
Electrical Design of Electrical Systems - Specifies components for electronic controllers; applies electronic controllers; creates electrical systems, or architecture concepts through specific knowledge of electrified (or electrical-based) systems to ensure a system design that adheres to both Cummins' and customer expectations.
Mechanical Design of Electrical Systems - Creates electrical system or electronics-based design or architecture concepts through specific knowledge of electrified (or electrical-based) systems to ensure a system design that adheres to both Cummins and customer expectations.
Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Mitigates potential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, and prioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the system of interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins’ products.
Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions through the utilization and/or interpretation of computational tools and methods that predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system and/or component level requirements.
Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.
Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

**Education, Licenses, Certifications:**
College, university, or equivalent PhD degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
Post-graduate (PhD) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
**Experience:**
Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**This role is intended to fill the power electronics technical functional excellence gaps:**
1. in leading the development of power stage and controller (hardware, software and architectures) of power electronic components for various electric power conversion (EPC) applications
2. in developing various control algorithms of power converters and electric machines for various electric power conversion (EPC) applications
3. in verification and validation testing of power electronics component/system prototypes and continuous design improvement
**Key skills/tools:** C, C++, Matlab/Simulink, PSPICE, PSIM, LTSPICE, PLECS, EMI/EMC, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), model-based development (MBD), auto code generation, principles of power electronics and controls, micro-controllers, real-time embedded controls, validation & verification, hardware/software hands-on testing and troubleshooting, etc.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
+ PhD degree in electrical engineering with specialization in power electronics (DC-AC and/or DC-DC converters) and electric machines (induction motors, PMSMs, etc.) used for renewable/alternative energy system applications such as energy storage, hydrogen or solid oxide fuel cells, solar/PV or wind power generation, grid-connected & off-grid power systems, traction or auxiliary motor drives, etc.
+ R&D experience in developing power electronics hardware and/or in developing controls of power electronic converters and electric machines
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ Collaborate with EPC system architects and global engineering teams to develop power electronics control solutions and/or power electronics hardware
+ Develop power electronics component and system simulation models using model-based development (MBD) approach
+ Design, implement and test control algorithms and software for various power electronic converters
+ Collaborate with embedded software engineers to perform control software generation and integration using MBD workflow
+ Integrate, test, tune, and troubleshoot power electronics hardware, control algorithms and software prototypes in SIL, HIL and power lab testing
+ Use system-level software and tools to calibrate and improve performance of power electronic hardware/software components and systems
+ Develop software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing cases to verify and validate various new designs of power electronic component and EPC systems

**Preferred Skills and Experience:**
+ Strong knowledge of power electronics circuits, systems, and controls; power converter topologies for various electric power conversion (EPC) applications
+ Strong knowledge of power semiconductor devices/modules, gate drivers, high-frequency magnetics, passive components
+ Experience in developing controls, diagnostics and protections for electric motor drives, grid fault ride-through, grid anti-islanding vs. microgrid controls, gird-tied, grid-forming, islanding, blackstart, seamless transitions between modes, paralleling multiple inverters/converters, and system identification
+ Experience in modeling and simulation of power electronic components and systems
+ Basic knowledge and application of microprocessors, DSPs, and FPGAs in real-time embedded solutions
+ Experience in analog and digital electronic circuit designs for various signal conditioning, drivers, power supplies, communications, fault detection & protections, etc.
+ Familiarity and use of network protocols such as CAN, LIN, J1939, Ethernet, and Bluetooth
+ Practical skills to use evaluation boards/kits, debuggers, and other development tools for rapid prototyping
+ Expertise in EMI/EMC design standards & practices, testing and mitigation
+ Knowledge of applicable standards such as IEEE 519, IEEE 1547, UL1741, UL1998, IEEE 1159, NEC 702, Utility Interconnection Agreement, IEEE 2030, MIL-STD TMS/461/705, EU GCC, SAE J1772, SAE J2954
