EHS Associate – Chipata

 

This position exists to support the implementation of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS), fleet, and security programs to promote a safe, healthy, and environmentally sustainable workplace. The role also ensures the efficient management of fleet operations and the effective execution of security procedures at the site office, based in Chipata.

 

As EHS Associate, you will:

 

Risk Assessment

Conduct annual pre-season EHS and Security risk assessment reviews for the site including that related to Agronomy Journey Risk and Agroforestry including proactive ongoing risk assessment related to Job safety Analysis for contractors to identify hazards and ensure compliance to JTI EHS Standards and recommend how risks could be reduced.

Inductions, Awareness and Local training programs

Coordinate EHS inductions for seasonal employees and visitors and collaborate closely with Site Managers and departmental colleagues to ensure that both permanent and temporary contractors carry out their work in alignment with JTI EHS Contractor Safety Standards. Ensure that toolbox talks and other group safety meetings are conducted on site, within the Agronomy team, and in Agroforestry, and provide support to site management in preparing materials and information required for EHS meetings.

Facility inspections & periodic Internal audits

Carry out regular site inspections and periodic internal audits to ensure compliance to EHS programs and safe work operating procedures and make recommendations to improve EHS compliance. Further submit records of inspections findings and compile statistical information of performance of EHS activities, programs and campaigns on a weekly and monthly basis in order to facilitate completion of HQ reports.

Fleet Management and Rider/ Driver Safety Program

The position will be responsible for day-to-day administration of the fleet on-site related to ensuring update-to-date fleet compliance requirements (road taxes, insurance and certificate of fitness) and work closely with on-site mechanic in the inspections & delivery of preventive maintenance of the fleet, supporting off-site bread-downs with the site drivers / mechanics under the supervision of the Site Operations Manager and re-order of spare parts to ensure and safe and efficient fleet. The position will support the Site Operations Manager on fuel management which includes issuance, tracking & reporting utilization and monthly fuel reconciliations. The position will ensure that the site fleet both operational and spare motorcycles, vehicles and tractors including assigned users are equipped with functional rider / driver safety monitoring devices (Telematics, Dashcams and Brightmiles app as per the Fleet Governance framework Furthermore, the position will work closely with the EHS & Fleet Management Systems Associate and Service Provider responsible for maintaining the monitoring devices to ensure optional up-time in order to have successful implementation of the rider/ driver behavior monitoring program / penalty system as outlined in the "Rider Safety Monitoring Standard" via tracking and submitting daily and cumulative weekly reports to Line management and coordinating related safety talks to eliminate incidents.

Facilities & Equipment Maintenance

Support the Facilities Specialist in ensuring timely maintenance and repair actions for office buildings and the warehouse facility, especially where issues impact EHS. Review and discuss critical findings from facilities inspections and escalate concerns to the Site Operations Manager for follow‑up with the Facilities Specialist to ensure defects are resolved promptly. Monthly inspection of Site Emergency response, work at height equipment and warehouse / agroforestry equipment to ensure compliance to local and corporate standards and report challenges to Line Manager for further action.

Behavior Observation Program, Incident / Non-conforming reporting and Investigations

Track and document unsafe acts observed during daily operations, report and analyze emerging trends across the buying site on operational activities (tobacco buying, crop input distribution, and workshop daily activities) and support the integration of these insights into weekly pre‑ and post‑shift safety talks to strengthen a proactive and positive safety culture. Ensure that all Incidents/Accidents including Near-misses and non- conformances are reported and investigated according to the JTI procedure including implementing corrective and preventive actions.

Physical and Crop Security Management

Support line management to oversee security guard force on site and ensure that they execute their duties professionally in accordance with agreed procedures and report any non-compliance to management in order to make follow up actions. Play key role in investigations of all security breaches for the site office and those from Crop security incident.

 

 Requirements

Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Full grade twelve (12) certificate. 2 – 3 years’ experience in similar position. Experience working in agri-business an added advantage Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Self-disciplined, organized, and structured multi-tasker with efficient project and management skills. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Fluent in oral and written English.
