**Job Summary and Qualifications**
The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Specialist coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered respiratory care. The RRT ECMO Specialist delivers this care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the department, and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. The RRT administers respiratory care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. The RRT performs diagnostic tests to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and lung disorders. The RRT performs ECMO therapy to support patients with severely impaired heart/lung function.
+ Maintains CPR certificate and license requirements.
+ Maintains NBRC credentials for Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist
+ Fulfills staff meeting, in-service, competency and on-going education requirements.
+ Monitors, operates, and adjusts ECMO circuits and associated components to maintain patient-specific parameters.
+ Continually assesses and evaluates ECMO circuit and notifies the physician of concerns/complications.
+ Competent in troubleshooting skills within circuit.
+ Confidently differentiate physiology for VV and VA ECMO indications.
+ Assists in staff training and competencies.
+ Adheres to established hospital policies and procedures related to ECMO management.
+ Acts as a resource to the interdisciplinary team for the safe management of the ECMO circuit.
+ Maintains scheduled pre- and post-oxygenator gases and other necessary laboratory monitoring.
+ Completes required shift documentation regarding patient progress.
+ Assumes responsibility for necessary bi-annual competencies, trainings, and education per ELSO guidelines.
+ Works in conjunction with the bedside nurse to ensure that the patient on ECMO has adequate perfusion, corrects for proper acid/base balance and hemodynamic stability within ordered parameters, and maintains other parameters as ordered by the ECMO service.
+ Assists the ECMO Medical Director and department management in the collection/review of quality improvement initiatives, using internal and external data to benchmark with the goal of establishing best practice.
+ QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Required:High School Graduate and Graduate Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) Preferred:High School Graduate and Graduate Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) EXPERIENCE: Required:Three years critical care experience. Preferred:Previous ECMO Specialist training and experience. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Required:Virginia Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner Maintain NBRC credentials for Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist American Heart Association OR American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association OR American Red Cross Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Preferred:Registry-eligible Respiratory Therapist Registered Respiratory Therapist NBRC Adult Critical Care Specialist
