Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Earthing Design Engineer to join our electrical engineering team, supporting the design and delivery of safe, compliant, and cost-effective earthing systems across a wide range of energy infrastructure projects.

This role is critical to ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical networks, particularly within high-voltage (HV), extra-high-voltage (EHV), and transmission environments. As part of the wider electrical design team, you will be responsible for the protection of personnel and equipment within HV/EHV substations, ensuring that all equipment is safely connected to earth.

Main Duties

Design and analyse earthing systems for substations, renewable energy sites (solar, wind, BESS), and grid connections.

Produce drawings and documentation to support soil resistivity surveys and testing.

Conduct soil resistivity testing, earth potential rise (EPR) studies, and touch/step voltage assessments.

Model earthing systems using CDEGS, building on layouts provided by electrical design colleagues.

Prepare clear and concise technical reports, drawings, and specifications for internal and external stakeholders.

Ensure compliance with UK and international standards, DNO/TSO policies, and project specifications.

Support commissioning and testing activities, including earth impedance and fall-of-potential measurements.

Collaborate with civil, electrical, and protection engineers to integrate earthing into overall project designs.

Provide technical responses and clarifications to site teams regarding earthing queries.

Contribute to the development of design risk assessments and ensure quality assurance across all deliverables.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of EMC and lightning protection principles and practices.

What We're Looking For

Degree, HND, or HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).

Proven experience in earthing design within the UK power industry (consultancy, contractor, or utility).

Significant experience delivering designs for DNO and ideally National Grid projects.

Proficiency in CDEGS software for earthing analysis.

Strong knowledge of HV and EHV substation standards and installation practices in the UK.

Ability to work proactively, solve problems, and coordinate across multiple design disciplines.

Excellent technical writing and reporting skills.

Working knowledge of UK and international standards, including:

ENA TS 41-24

BS EN 50522

BS EN 62305-2

BS 7430

NGTS 3.01.02 (RES)
