Drivetrain Systems Engineer
Ford Motor Company
We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?
Product Development uses design thinking & user experience methods to deliver breakthrough products and services that delight our customers. We bring innovative, exciting, and sustainable ideas to life. We have opportunities around the world for you to contribute to advancements in autonomy, electrification, smart mobility technologies, and more!
The Drivetrain System of a vehicle is a sophisticated, integrated assembly of components designed to efficiently transfer power from the engine/battery to the wheels, enabling propulsion, precise torque delivery, and optimal vehicle performance. The Drivetrain System of the vehicle also includes the design to allow for the control of lateral movement, controlled deceleration, and body control during operation. These systems are crucial for vehicle dynamics, fuel efficiency, and, most importantly, safety, providing the necessary motive force and control.
We are seeking an experienced and skilled systems engineer for the Drivetrain System. You will work with other systems engineers, functional SMEs, and Technical Specialists by leveraging advanced technologies to improve quality and efficiency for all programs. You will work with the team in executing full system engineering, systems MBFMA, and systems delivery.
A systems engineering organization provides end-to-end solutions, encompassing the entire lifecycle of complex systems. From initial concept and requirements analysis through design, development, integration, testing, and deployment, such an organization ensures seamless coordination across multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, high-performance systems. By combining technical expertise, project management skills, and a holistic approach to system design, a systems engineering organization optimizes efficiency and ensures that solutions meet both functional and operational requirements.
**In this position...**
+ Analyze complex hardware and software systems to develop innovative, multi-functional solutions that meet vehicle cost, weight, labor, performance objectives, and customer expectations.
+ Lead technical trade-off discussions within Systems Engineering Reviews.
+ Create and maintain comprehensive system models using SysML (MagicDraw), including boundary diagrams for component interactions, requirements creation/curation, and test method selection.
**What you'll do...**
+ Develop analytical models using free body diagrams and mathematical equations for electromechanical systems, performing simulations in MATLAB.
+ Conduct Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) analyses and Requirements-in-the-Loop (RiL) analyses.
+ Define and cascade regulatory requirements as well as realistic, balanced targets and functional breakdowns from the system level to downstream stakeholders.
+ Ensure the robust completion of the Robustness Checklist process and secure necessary signoffs to minimize failure risks and ensure part reliability.
+ Apply root cause analysis, advanced problem-solving techniques, and statistical methods to identify and resolve issues.
+ Collaborate with purchasing and subsystem owners to identify cost-effective solutions for system components.
+ Utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) and Smart FMA AI, to enhance the development of Model-Based Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (MBFMA), improving speed and accuracy.
**You'll have...**
+ Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
+ 5+ years of experience in systems engineering or a related field.
+ Proven experience modeling automotive systems or integrating multiple systems into a vehicle.
+ Experience in system architecture development, process definition, and requirements derived through structured engineering processes and trade studies.
+ Strong knowledge of systems engineering principles, practices, and tools.
**Even better, you may have...**
+ Master’s degree in engineering.
+ Expertise in mechanisms, material properties, and manufacturability of driveline components (e.g., gears, shafts, bearings, differentials, electric motors), including their modeling and characterization.
+ Proficiency in signal processing and analysis, control theory, and data acquisition systems.
+ Hands-on experience with relevant tools such as SysML (MagicDraw), MATLAB, Simulink, LABVIEW, SIMSOLID, 3DX/Catia/TCe/FEDE, CAE (IPS), and JIRA.
+ Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.
+ Strong analytical and systems thinking skills.
