The New York Times Opinion department is looking for a correspondent to report and write editorials on a range of public policy issues.
You will have expertise in the biggest questions, ideas and arguments in public policy. The journalist has an appreciation of a wide array of topics and expertise in at least one of the following: U.S. politics, global affairs, technology and the law. You can identify emerging trends with the skills to report and write about them persuasively.
You must be gifted at storytelling, and skilled at writing articles with a clear, sharply defined argument or analytical points. You will be curious, be willing to go beyond conventional wisdom and be open to arguments from across the political spectrum. We are looking for an idea generator, someone who’s constantly pitching ambitious stories.
You may be called upon to lend expertise to and work on audio, graphics and video projects. You will be willing to engage with readers when appropriate. The journalist will work with Opinion editors on the audience and fact-checking teams. You have an ability to juggle many projects at multiple levels of completion while following deadlines.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Write editorials on a wide range of topics Develop ideas for editorials, including those others will write Participate in regular group meetings to shape overall approach of editorials Contribute to other parts of the Opinion report, including essays, video, audio and graphics. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to the Editorial Director, Opinion,Basic Qualifications:
5+ years experience publishing highly ambitious journalism Demonstrated ability to write clearly and creatively about complex topics Experience developing, pitching, and helping to execute high-impact enterprise or narrative-driven pieces, including collaboration with multimedia teams, including design, photo, graphics, audio and video, on how to best tell these stories Experience working simultaneously on long-term projects and tight news deadlines Experience maintaining the highest standards for fact checking, accuracy and fairness, and working with the research team Capacity to perform related work as assignedPreferred Qualifications:
A highly developed network of sources Expertise in one of more areas that is a regular subject of Times editorials, including politics, international affairs and, technology and AI Enthusiasm for coordinating with Opinion’s audience team to maximize the reach and impact of the workThis position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
