Key Objective:
Pearson operates in five main business divisions, with entities in 50+ countries. Our largest markets are the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
This is a newly created position which will bring together Pearson’s UK and International Corporate Tax Compliance, and business support activity, under a single team. As a result of recent operating model changes, and with a global outsource in place, this role is focussed on establishing a sustainable strategy for delivering tax compliance and advisory services taking into account increasing compliance obligations and the impact of emerging technology.
The role reports to VP UK, International Tax and Transfer Pricing, and has three direct reports with responsibility for corporate tax compliance and associated business support in the UK (including Pillar 2 UK compliance and global strategy), and corporate tax compliance for selected International markets.
As the leader of this team, you will drive unification of our approach across markets, ensuring greater consistency, efficiency, and oversight whilst maintaining flexibility to address local nuances with the support of external advisors.
By bringing these activities together, underpinned by a single ERP system, we plan to harness technology and data-driven insights to streamline processes, drive transformation, and better manage risks and opportunities.
This role will also lead on tax risk management, business support and project-based work for the International markets.
The role will interact with Pearson’s broader tax strategy agenda and group processes, including responsibility for year-end reporting, and ETR and Cash Tax forecasting in relevant markets.
There may be opportunities to get involved in Pearson’s wider tax landscape, including special projects (e.g. M&A).

Key Responsibilities:
Provide tax support and advice to Pearson’s businesses in all International markets (including those where tax compliance is managed outside Group Tax), including supporting financial controllers in all tax matters – including new business initiatives, supply chain and contracting models and managing local tax audits.
Oversee a team responsible for corporate tax and transfer pricing compliance (supported by Global TP Director) in the UK and selected International markets.
Oversee the continued transition of local compliance activity in International markets to Group Tax, with a focus on continuous improvement and efficiency.
Build relationships with regional business and finance leaders, and other non-tax stakeholders as a trusted business partner.
Work effectively with other sub-teams in the tax function including the US, transfer pricing, and indirect tax.
Identify and drive/implement regional value adding tax opportunities.
Advise on tax efficient financing and repatriations for the regions, including implementation of in-house bank initiative.
Proactively identify, manage and mitigate regional and group tax risks.
Monitor legislative developments, evaluate implications and application to Pearson.
Sign off UK & International year-end tax reporting matters.
Input into global group tax planning initiatives, forecasting and projects which support Pearson’s overall tax strategy.
Qualifications and experience required:
Experienced UK corporate tax professional, with experience at Tax Senior Manager level or above.
University degree or other higher education equivalent, and relevant professional qualification (accounting, tax or legal).
Ability to set direction, anticipate future trends, and align team efforts with long-term goals.
Builds credibility and trust, influences stakeholders at all levels, and gains buy-in for initiatives and change.
Builds, motivates, and develops high-performing teams. Sets clear expectations, gives feedback, and coaches others.
Drives accountability and delivers outcomes.
Proficient in tax accounting, with a strong understanding of ETR and cash tax implications of transactions and decisions.
Broad up to date knowledge of international tax, and of relevant UK tax law.
Ability to interact with all levels and parts of an organisation including Treasury, Legal, Finance and Business and to manage advisers.
Good project management experience and expertise.
Strong organisational skills and documentation skills.
Ability to manage external advisors to time and on budget.
Location
Based anywhere in the UK. Role may be remote, with occasional travel to Pearson offices.
Group Tax are based throughout the UK and US, with particular presence at our Corporate Head office in London (including the Head of Tax) and Belfast.
