Director, Engineering – HPE Security Service Edge (SSE)

Overview:

Join HPE’s Security Service Edge (SSE) organization as a senior engineering leader driving the operational foundation and console powering our cloud-native cybersecurity services. This role is accountable for global Ops, management and data engineering teams - ensuring performance, security, observability, and insight at scale. You'll combine hands-on technical leadership with strategic execution to enable high availability, efficient delivery, and data-driven decision making.

Job Family Definition:

Leads a large, multidisciplinary engineering organization within HPE’s Security Service Edge (SSE) business, focusing on the development of advanced cloud-native cybersecurity solutions. Oversees teams designing, developing, analyzing, troubleshooting, and operating highly scalable and secure systems and applications. Requires broad technical expertise across cloud architecture, high-performance computing, large-scale distributed systems, network security, and big data technologies.

 

Management Level Definition:

Leads a major functional area within the SSE business, fully accountable for its operational success, strategic execution, and technical innovation. Responsible for aligning organizational activities with business goals, shaping engineering practices, and influencing company-wide security and cloud strategies. Owns a significant portfolio of measurable outcomes, including product performance, customer experience, and operational efficiency. Advises executive leadership on strategic technology decisions and contributes directly to long-term business planning. Reports to VP of Engineering or equivalent executive leader.

 

Responsibilities:

Provide strategic and technical leadership for Ops, Data Engineering and Management teams supporting the SSE platform.Lead and grow high-performing, geographically distributed engineering teams.Define organizational goals aligned with business and technology roadmaps; drive execution against measurable outcomes.Champion engineering excellence through DevOps, automation, security-by-design, and modern development practices.Collaborate with product, architecture, customer success, and executive leadership to drive technical and business success.Foster a culture of innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.Provide coaching, career development, and succession planning for leaders and senior engineers.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field in a known university; advanced degree preferred.15+ years of experience in engineering, with 10+ years in leadership roles managing large-scale teams.Demonstrated expertise in cloud-native operations (AWS, Azure, or GCP), infrastructure-as-code, observability, and incident management.Strong background in data engineering platforms (Snowflake, Airflow, etc.), data governance, and analytics delivery.Experience overseeing security operations, including cloud security architecture, compliance, and access controls.Proven ability to drive high-scale, reliable, and efficient SaaS operations.Strong business and operational judgment with a track record of cross-functional impact.Excellent communication skills, comfortable engaging technical and executive audiences alike.

Strong organizational leadership, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration skills.Demonstrated ability to deliver highly scalable, secure, and performant cloud services.Deep technical expertise in areas such as networking, cloud computing, large-scale data processing, and/or security architecture.Strong business acumen and ability to align technical strategy with business objectives.Mastery in communication across diverse audiences (executives, technical teams, partners).Advanced prioritization and multi-tasking capabilities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.Strong understanding of cybersecurity threats, trends, and best practices in cloud-native environments.Ability to lead geographically distributed teams and manage complex program execution at scale.
