Director of Finance
Description We are looking for an experienced Director of Finance to lead and oversee the financial operations of a dynamic organization in Newport News, Virginia. This role requires a strategic thinker who can manage diverse financial responsibilities, including accounting, payroll, and retiree benefits administration, while ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership skills and a proven track record in financial management to support the organization's mission and goals. Responsibilities: • Direct and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and retirement benefits administration. • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and reports in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). • Manage the organization's budget development, financial forecasting, and operational financial planning processes. • Oversee the auditing and reconciliation of department expenditures to maintain financial integrity. • Serve as the ex-officio secretary of the Retirement Board and manage the administration of a retirement fund • Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard financial assets and ensure compliance with financial policies. • Supervise the processing of payroll for bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly schedules. • Collaborate with other departments to communicate and enforce financial policies and procedures. • Lead efforts in financial compliance, corporate financial planning, and procurement management. • Support the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and other required reporting. Requirements • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management or a related field, preferably within a non-profit organization. • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required. • Strong expertise in financial reporting, audits, and compliance with financial standards. • Proficiency with financial tools such as BlackLine and experience with month-end close processes. • Demonstrated knowledge of retirement benefits administration and payroll systems. • Proven ability to manage budgets, operational forecasts, and financial projections. • Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders. • Comprehensive understanding of internal controls, procurement processes, and corporate financial planning.
