Director for Carr’s Hill Operations

The University of Virginia seeks a Director for Carr’s Hill Operations. The Director serves as the steward of Carr’s Hill, the home of the University of Virginia’s president, Carr’s Hill was completed in 1909 and every University president has lived in the home and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.  The Director will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations of the public and private spaces of the main home, outbuildings, and property grounds while planning and implementing activities that support daily and long-term future use of the home. This role will act as liaison on behalf of the president and the presidential family between stakeholders, constituents of the University, guests, and community members. The Director will coordinate small events on behalf of the president and will provide support for larger events by ensuring the readiness of space and supplies while promoting and facilitating the overall mission of Carr’s Hill as a welcoming and inclusive space. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Oversees operational and administrative activities for Carr’s Hill, including supervising executive house staff.

Manages Carr’s Hill in a way that reflects the president’s overall strategy and goals for the University.

Cultivates positive relationships with all University partners and coordinates with appropriate leadership when recommending policies, procedures, plans, and programs at Carr’s Hill.

Manages the president's residence for overall readiness in support of University-sponsored events and activities.  Ensures the use of space is in alignment with personal and family use.

Maintains a detailed service schedule with facilities management for upkeep and general maintenance of the physical home and University contents.

Routinely interfaces with facilities management, historic preservationists, architect, landscapers, police, fire department, and other University services for routine and unplanned maintenance and projects.

Works with appropriate constituents to schedule any work on the property or in the main house with minimal impact to the family.

Maintains a reservation calendar for the property and its guest cottages, and keeps the president and family updated as appropriate.

Manages Carr’s Hill budget specific to maintenance, service, and supplies.

Plans and manages up to 6-person small-scale activities and social events at Carr’s Hill.

Collaborates with President’s Office Events Team to plan and execute larger events at Carr’s Hill.

Interfaces with stakeholders, constituents, vendors, faculty, students, community, and other guests to increase favorable public awareness of Carr’s Hill.

Exercises absolute discretion while interacting with the president’s family and guests, at times in a private setting that can involve personal matters, to ensure privacy and confidentiality. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; equivalent related experience may be substituted for the degreeExperience: Three years of related experience in event planningAbility to exercise absolute discretion regarding family and guests to ensure privacy and confidentialityOrganizational, event planning, and management abilities

Strong time management skillsAbility to prioritize responsibilitiesAbility to delegate tasks effectivelyExcellent communication and collaboration skillsExperience with developing and executing schedules


Physical Demands: The job requires traveling some distance to manage internal and exterior household affairs; and occasionally lifting of up to 20 lbs.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000 commensurate with education and experience.

Work Arrangements: This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
