Within Enterprise Digital, the Enterprise Digital Experimentation & Analytics (EDEA) organization partners closely with Product, Technology and Marketing teams to optimize digital journeys using data, experimentation, and advanced analytics.
Role Overview
The Director, Digital Data Quality & Tagging is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency, efficiency, and reliability of digital interaction data across American Express digital channels, including web, mobile app, and outbound digital experiences.
This role owns the digital tagging and instrumentation strategy, ongoing data quality governance, and optimization of data collection volume to balance insight needs, platform performance, and cost efficiency. The Director will partner closely with Product, Technology, Adobe platform teams, and Analytics to embed best-in-class data standards into digital product development and platform evolution.
This role requires strong technical depth in digital instrumentation, an understanding of enterprise-scale data platforms, and the ability to influence outcomes across a global, matrixed organization.
Key Responsibilities:
· Digital Data Quality & Governance
Own the end-to-end digital data quality strategy for membership experiences, ensuring accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and consistency of event-level data.
Establish and maintain data quality standards, validation rules, monitoring processes, and issue management routines across web and mobile platforms.
Proactively identify data defects, inconsistencies, and breaks; partner with Technology teams to drive prioritization and resolution.
Tagging & Instrumentation Strategy
Lead the design, implementation, and governance of digital tagging and instrumentation frameworks, including event taxonomies, data layers, and metadata standards.
Embed tagging and measurement requirements into the product development life cycle, ensuring instrumentation is designed upfront for all new features, journeys, and platform enhancements.
Ensure digital instrumentation supports core use cases including customer experience measurement, experimentation, personalization, and digital revenue tracking.
Adobe Platform Partnership
Partner closely with Adobe platform teams to ensure digital tagging strategies align with enterprise Adobe implementations and best practices.
Drive consistency, standardization, and governance of Adobe-based data capture across platforms and journeys.
Act as a key point of contact between Enterprise Digital, Adobe teams, and Technology partners to resolve data issues and scale enhancements effectively.
Hit Volume Optimization & Efficiency
Own accountability for optimizing the volume of digital data collection (“hits”), balancing analytical needs with platform performance, data quality, and cost efficiency.
Identify and eliminate redundant, low-value, or noisy events while preserving critical signals for measurement and decision-making.
Establish governance to continuously review, rationalize, and optimize tagging as products and journeys evolve.
Measurement Standards & Documentation
Define and maintain enterprise-aligned digital measurement standards, including KPI definitions, event schemas, and detailed tagging documentation.
Drive adoption of standardized tagging and measurement practices across journeys, platforms, and markets.
Ensure alignment with enterprise data governance, privacy, consent management, risk, and compliance requirements.
Stakeholder Partnership & Influence
Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted partner to Product, Technology, Analytics, Marketing, and Platform teams.
Influence digital roadmaps by clearly articulating data risks, dependencies, and opportunities in business terms.
Partner with global teams to scale tagging and data quality practices consistently across regions.
People Leadership
Lead, develop, and inspire a team of digital data quality and tagging professionals.
Foster a culture of ownership, rigor, continuous improvement, and strong cross-functional collaboration.
Coach team members to build deep technical expertise and enterprise mindset.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications & Experience
Postgraduate degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Analytics, Statistics, or a related field.
7+ years of experience in digital analytics, data quality, tagging/instrumentation, or data governance roles.
Proven hands-on experience designing and governing digital tagging frameworks across web and mobile platforms.
Strong understanding of event-based digital data, platform instrumentation, and large-scale data ecosystems.
Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with Product and Technology teams in agile delivery environments.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to balance technical detail and business impact.
Experience leading teams and influencing outcomes in a global, matrixed organization
