Position Overview: The Hartford is seeking an experienced Director of AI Governance to support the strategic development and implementation of our AI lifecycle. This role will partner with Legal, Compliance, and Enterprise Risk Management to lead the creation of enterprise AI standards and policies aligned with compliance objectives. The Director will drive the refinement and implementation of procedural expectations that integrate into AI development and monitoring lifecycles, ensuring comprehensive governance coverage across the organization. This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our locations (Hartford, CT preferred) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office should maintain their current work arrangement with the expectation of coming into the office as business needs arise. Key Responsibilities Enterprise Standards & Policy Development + Lead cross-functional teams to build an AI governance standards and policies catalog in partnership with Legal, Compliance, and ERM functions. + Develop detailed procedural expectations and operational frameworks covering critical governance concepts, including Human-in-the-loop requirements, monitoring protocol, bias testing standards, explainability frameworks, and model validation procedures + Ensure standards can be effectively integrated into AI development and deployment processes. + Partner closely with AI technology teams to embed compliance expectations into development workflows. + Ensure policies and standards are followed and reflected throughout the process. + Participate in several active AI governance related workstreams + Establish clear connectivity between business unit governance activities and enterprise AI lifecycle processes to ensure seamless integration and oversight. Required Qualifications + Bachelor's degree in business, technology, or related field + 10+ years of experience in governance, risk management, or technology program management + 5+ years hands-on experience with AI/DS/ML projects + Demonstrated experience partnering with Legal, Compliance, and Risk Management functions + Strong understanding of AI/ML technologies and associated governance challenges Preferred Qualifications + Experience in regulated industries (insurance, financial services, healthcare, etc.) + Background in technology implementation and lifecycle management + Familiarity with AI ethics frameworks and bias testing methodologies + Project management or process improvement certifications or comparable experience Key Competencies + Cross-functional collaboration, strong partnership and stakeholder management + Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + Process design and operational framework development + Technology-business translation abilities Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
