SUMMARY:

The Director of Transportation Operations is responsible for leading operations and strategy deployment within the Customer Channels Group. This leader will be responsible for divisional transportation across business units within the Group. The core pillars of focus entail developing a standardized method for budget compliance and productivity that uses data, systems, and processes to drive continuous improvement in the areas of Cost, Quality, Service, Safety, and Sustainability. The person will be accountable for driving transportation optimization and ‘end to end’ cross functional optimization projects and initiatives. This role has complete budget responsibility from annual planning process through execution and detailed variance analysis. A high level of financial acuity is critical to success.

This position is onsite in our Pittsburgh office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and implement the 5-year Transportation Strategy for Operations, Digitization and Sustainability.Design the appropriate inbound & outbound road/air network applying the correct mix of CCG Fleet, Full Truck Load, Less Than Truck Load, Parcel carriers, and cross-docks.Lead a team of Managers and Analysts to enable successful achievement of our Annual Operating Plan through lean techniques and proactive measures.Review and supervise transportation cost containment and drive continuous improvement through analysis and operational improvement.Recognize and capitalize on opportunities for adjustment to mode, service levels, shipment frequency, consolidation, and using network optimization capabilities within and outside of Thermo Fisher Scientific.Develop and present Monthly Business Reviews (MBR) that accurately depict the status of the department’s performance and actions in place for forward progress.Support the development and implement a program for corporate, divisional, and local level carrier management programs facilitated by formal review meetings and creation of performance scorecards.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Logistics, Finance, or a related area or equivalent. Master’s or advanced degree preferred.7+ years of transportation / logistics leadership managementValidated experience running a complex, multi-modal transportation network serving both domestic and export markets, including ground and express parcel, cold chain, air freight truckload, and ocean transportation.Deployment of Logistics Control Tower, including logistics visibility, risk management, and cross functional partner managementOutstanding analytical and digital literacy with experience using analytical tools and databases.Experience managing hazardous materials (chemicals) is a plus.Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.A dynamic, high-energy leader with a track record as an effective communicator and uses a collaborative approach to problem solving.Validated understanding of carrier operations and costs across all modes including Fleet, Less -than- Truckload (LTL), Truckload (TL), inter-modal, Freight Forwarding Air/Ocean, Parcel, etc.Fleet management understanding and optimization for the US network.Digitization and improvement of real time visibility to material movement for an enhancement of customer experience.Must have a consistent record of effectively leading a financial P&L, building, and achieving an Annual Operating Plan that drives year over year cost reduction.Confirmed leadership skills to take charge and initiate actions to inspire change.Analytical qualities to make sound decisions through the conceptualization and evaluation of different courses of action to meet or exceed operational goals.Possess systems (including database management and reporting) and project management skills.Ability to travel up to 25%.
