About the Team

The Safety Manager is a critical element of the Risk Management Team.  This individual will have responsibilities for safety procedures and processes pertaining to Store’s, Corporate Office, Supply Chain functions.  The goal is to work with locations and management to enhance safety compliance through a positive approach.   

 

Overview of the Director, Safety Role 

The Director of Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety programs across all retail locations, corporate offices, and some distribution operations. This leadership role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations while fostering a culture of safety excellence that protects employees, customers, and company assets. The position requires strategic thinking, hands-on program management, and the ability to influence safety behaviors at all organizational levels.

 

Responsibilities

 

Program Development & Management:

Design and implement enterprise-wide safety policies, procedures, and standards across all retail and distribution locationsDevelop risk assessment protocols and safety training programs tailored to retail and warehouse operationsEstablish safety performance metrics, conduct regular audits, and drive continuous improvement initiativesManage incident investigation processes and implement corrective action plans

 

Compliance & Risk Management:

Ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations, state safety requirements, and industry standardsConduct regular safety inspections and coordinate with regulatory agencies during visitsManage workers' compensation claims process and collaborate with insurance carriersMaintain current knowledge of evolving safety regulations and industry best practices

 

Leadership & Team Management:

Lead and develop a team of safety professionals Partner with operations management to integrate safety considerations into daily business activitiesProvide safety training and coaching to managers and associates at all levelsChampion safety culture initiatives and employee engagement programs

 

Strategic Planning & Analysis:

Develop annual safety budgets and resource allocation plansAnalyze safety data and trends to identify improvement opportunities along with implementing strategies/programs/initiatives to effect opportunities.Prepare executive reports on safety performance and present to senior leadershipCollaborate with facilities management on equipment safety and facility design standards

 

Required Competencies and Technical Skills:

Expert knowledge of OSHA regulations, particularly those applicable to retail and warehouse operationsProficiency in safety management systems and incident tracking softwareUnderstanding of industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and material handling safetyExperience with safety training development and delivery methods

 

Leadership & Communication:

Strong leadership presence with ability to influence without direct authorityExcellent written and verbal communication skills for all organizational levelsProven ability to build relationships and drive change across diverse teamsExperience presenting to executive leadership and external stakeholders

 

Analytical & Problem-Solving:

Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret safety data and identify trendsExperience with root cause analysis and corrective action plan developmentProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety-specific software applicationsProject management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

 

Experience

Minimum 10 years of progressive safety management experience in retail, distribution, or warehouse environments5+ years in leadership roles managing safety teams and programsProven track record of reducing workplace incidents and workers' compensation costsExperience with multi-location operations and remote team managementKnowledge of Industrial Hygiene concepts.   Experience in developing and implementing safety programs, i.e., trainings, policies. OSHA experience, i.e., responding to inquiries, drafting policies and programs .

The expected starting pay range for this position is $150,000-$160,000. Applicable pay ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. In addition to competitive pay, compensation may include a variety of other components like benefits, paid time off, merit, and bonus opportunities.
