Director, Counsel, Business Legal– Sydney, Australia (Fixed Term)

An opportunity to join Western Union as a Counsel in Business Legal Affairs, for 12 months on a full-time basis. Play a key role in helping a NYSE listed organization navigate commercial and corporate law by supporting strategic initiatives and business operations across Asia Pacific (APAC) and the Middle East.

Western Union powers your pursuit.

Role Responsibilities:

As part of the APAC & Middle East Legal Team, you’ll be assigned primary responsibility for certain workstreams as well as supporting other team members on an as needs basis. This may include day-to-day legal management of business in certain countries or territories, acting as legal lead on distinct projects, legal management of interactions with third parties (including regulators) and providing legal support to other stakeholders and functions across the region.   You will be expected to provide timely and commercial legal and regulatory support for BAU operations and new initiatives as well as partnering with business leaders to help execute the strategic priorities of the company. You will need to work independently as well as cooperatively as part of a cohesive regional team. Your work will include reviewing, drafting, and negotiating agreements for Western Union Consumer Money Transfer, Payments and Digital in coordination with other lawyers, business leaders and internal stakeholders (and providing legal advice in connection thereto). Superior skills in researching, analyzing, and applying new and existing laws are key. You will review and advise on new and existing business requirements, drive end-to-end customer value, and display a customer-first orientation. You are no stranger to working in a team, cross-functionally and to liaising with regulators.

Role Requirements:

To be successful in this role, 6+ years of financial services experience in an international law firm or corporate legal department of a multi-national corporation is essential. While not essential, alternate language skills may be viewed favorably (for example, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese or Indonesian). Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited school of law, admitted to at least one  state bar in Australia, or equivalent for any key country in the APAC or the Middle East. You will need good communication and rapport with team members and stakeholders. Financial services experience is critical. Whilst payments and licensing experience is desirable, it is not a pre-requisite. Key skills sought include the ability to promptly assess and react to business incidents or events, be able to clearly identify and articulate relevant legal questions and concerns, be solutions-oriented and commercially minded, be adept at learning quickly from others, able to exercise sound intuition and act in a leadership capacity to drive projects and inspire others.  This role reports to the Managing Associate General Counsel for Business Legal Affairs, APAC & Middle East (based in Sydney).
