Position Overview

Shaw Industries is hiring a Design Engineer to support innovation and operational excellence across our Corporate Machine Shops. Reporting to the Machine Shop Manager, this role leads a team of CAD Designers and collaborates with internal manufacturing and support teams to develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions. Responsibilities include concept development, design execution, cost estimation, and direct engagement with machinists and fabricators. The position also supports the implementation of new technologies and process improvements to enhance shop productivity.

This position will be based in Dalton, GA, with responsibilities requiring work at other Shaw facility locations.

Key ResponsibilitiesLead and support a team of two CAD Designers, ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines.Develop and present design concepts and cost estimates to address manufacturing and operational challenges.Collaborate with plant managers, department leaders, engineers, machinists, and fabricators to implement practical, cost-effective solutions.Apply knowledge of manufacturing processes and mechanical design principles (e.g., stress, strain, tolerances, welded joints, gears, bearings) to solve complex engineering problems.Interpret, modify, and maintain shop drawings and OEM documentation in accordance with Corporate Engineering Standards.Research, evaluate, and implement new technologies to improve machine shop efficiency, including training personnel on new software and equipment.Provide basic systems support for shop PCs and networks to ensure operational continuity.Manage small to mid-sized capital projects, including planning, budgeting, and execution.Maintain accurate and organized design documentation and drawing files.Minimum RequirementsPossess a high school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in a related field is preferred.Have a minimum of 3 years of experience in a machine shop or comparable manufacturing environment.Demonstrate proficiency in CAM software and AutoDesk CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault).Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers to verify dimensions and tolerances.Apply working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications to support documentation and communication tasks.Set up and troubleshoot PC hardware and software to maintain shop productivity.Provide customer support and prepare accurate quotes in a machining or fabrication setting.Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats across teams and departments.Travel to plant locations using personal or company transportation; maintain a valid driver’s license.
