Job Description

The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 12,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund the restoration and management across these ecosystems.
Major Responsibilities
- Under the direction of the Chief of Natural Resources, with wide latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, manage the protection, restoration, and management of Parks’ 12,000 acres of natural areas.
- Oversee technical teams at NRG, including but not limited to Capital design & construction, wetland and forest restoration, conservation and protection, community stewardship, and the production of native plants. Work with the Chief of Natural Resources and program Directors to ensure that projects and programs are aligned with division and agency mission and goals.
- Provide senior leadership on strategic direction for the Natural Resources Group, and foster collaboration across programs.
- Coordinate the creation and implementation of standard operating procedures to ensure coordination and effective delivery of Natural Resources Group programs and services to other divisions of the Agency, other Agencies, and the public.
- Pursue funding opportunities through grants and other sources to advance and expand the work of the Natural Resources Group.
- Provide leadership for the development of best practices in ecological restoration and natural resource protection.
- Support collaborative work with the US Forest Service, the Natural Areas Conservancy, and other agencies and organizations contributing to scientific research, monitoring, and natural resource management.
- Manage and motivate a wide variety of technical professionals to meet division and agency objectives. Help plan and implement staff training programs and perform staff evaluations. Communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of management.
- Prepare and review briefings, reports, presentations, and correspondence; meet with elected officials and constituents to discuss natural resource matters.
- Provide regular updates on the status of various projects and programs and ensure that projects advance in a timely manner.

ADMINISTRATIVE HORTICULTURIST - 1007C
Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with major study in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape architecture and four years of full-time, paid experience in horticultural work of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive capacity; or
2. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must have at least a high school diploma or evidence of having passed an examination for a high school equivalency diploma and one year of supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described above.

Salary Min: $130,000.00
Salary Max: $140,000.00
