As a Decision Scientist, you will be responsible and accountable to deliver data driven insights that drive tangible business outcomes.  Partnering with different stakeholders including Finance, Marketing, Operations, Strategy and Technology teams, you will be providing solutions and answers to critical and high impact business problems.  

 

As Decision Scientist, you will… 

 

Partner with business stakeholders to identify and clarify core problems and questions of interest through data driven insights Use quantitative decision models and analytical methods to derive answers and recommendations  Design experiments to validate business decisions and measure impact Develop dashboards, visualizations and reports to communicate insights to non-technical stakeholders Work cross functionally with data engineers to ensure data pipelines are integrated and robust 

 

Key Responsibilities and Requirements: 

  

Data Preparation: Under guidance of more senior decision scientists, execute extraction and synthesis of data, extract data from various databases, including Azure: data lake storage, SQL server and legacy systems: Oracle; perform exploratory data analysis, cleanse, massage, and aggregate data. Process 1st 2nd, and 3rd party customer data in next generation privacy compliant infrastructure. Data Visualization: Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information. Familiar with common communication and data presentation and storytelling skills. Data manipulation and modeling: Ability to procure and manipulate large-scale, complex data from a variety of systems (AWS, Azure, Oracle, on prem, web tool, etc.), experience reshaping data to ensure it is in right structure for analysis, filtering and removal of outliers. Demonstrated experience with cloud tech for data and analytics solutions(Azure, AWS). Data methodologies and analysis: Applicable business experience and the ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information required for statistical analysis and modeling techniques, including descriptive and predictive analysis (models, for example regression, cluster, factor, survival, drivers, anomaly detection, etc.), dashboard building, with proficiency in Excel, SQL, SAS, R, Python, Tableau / PowerBI, and experimental design platforms. Uses data methodologies and skills in accordance with business applicability and insights operationalization. Business Understanding: Has working knowledge and understanding of Starbucks business, and business acumen in general. Requires mentoring and guidance, but over time can make more of the connection between data and business applicability. •Insights Operationalization: Effectively presents complex technical material to non-technical audiences in an approachable way. Provide analytic support (code documentation, data transformations, algorithms, etc.) to implement rules and model insights and recommendations into business processes. Collaboration and Evangelism: Outstanding collaboration skills with colleagues at all organizational levels; understands decision sciences and advanced analytics, and how to evangelize the craft.

Very curious: love problem solving and asking why Always learning and seeking out new benchmark, industry trends instead of relying on the norm knowledgeable and understanding of Starbucks, Licensing and franchising business, food and beverage industry and general business and financial acumen.   Flexible and know when a simple heuristic beats a complex model Pragmatic and understanding that data and models inform but do not dictate every decision Have a BA/BS concentration in Business, Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Economics. Demonstrated experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and Microsoft Office Proficient with SQL, SAS, Python or R Knowledgeable in statistics (descriptive, regression, etc.)

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above. 

  

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
