What You Need to Know About the RoleWe are seeking a top-level Data Engineer to join our Business Data Solutions – Data Governance (BDS-DG) team at PayPal. You will be responsible for analysis, design, coding, and testing of data applications, as well as ETL engineering using GCP (BigQuery, Bigtable, Dataproc), Java, Python, Spark, Oracle, and Big Data technologies (HDFS, Hive, HBase, Kafka, Firestore).

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Participate and collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and deliver scalable solutions
Plan and execute projects efficiently and effectively
Approach problems creatively, considering all possibilities and options
Proactively anticipate and communicate problems to the team and management
Support all functions of the product lifecycle as required
Work effectively in a fast-paced environment
Deliver results from loosely defined requirements
Build REST services using the Spring framework to read data from disparate sources, perform validation, and expose results via REST APIs (API development experience is a plus)
Schedule jobs using UC4 and Airflow
Write and maintain pipelines in Python
Develop Spark jobs for large dataset processing and transformation
Leverage LLMs for development as needed
What You Need to Bring
2–4 years of experience in the IT industry, preferably within the data technology space
Advanced programming skills in Java and Python
Proficiency in Google Cloud Platform, Big Data, and Streaming Integrations
Strong experience with any cloud platform (GCP/AWS/Azure)
Experience with MPP systems and strong SQL programming skills
Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts
Familiarity with handling large volumes of data and data movement best practices
Experience with data warehousing architecture and data modeling best practices
Expertise in database programming and performance tuning
Experience with file systems, server architectures, and distributed systems
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong analytical skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Agile methodology experience highly preferred
Experience with Hadoop, Spark, HBase, and Hive highly preferred
Knowledge and experience using cloud platforms and open-source technology for data governance
Experience identifying use cases for AI and LLMs
Initiative, strong communication skills, and a willingness to contribute beyond core responsibilities
