As a Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and optimizing scalable data solutions while managing and administering SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases to ensure performance, high availability, and security. You will develop and maintain robust data pipelines, ETL processes, and API integrations to enable seamless data movement across systems, supporting analytics and business intelligence initiatives. In this role, you will enforce data governance and quality standards, implement best practices for traceability and compliance, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver solutions aligned with business objectives. Additionally, you will provide strong DBA support through performance tuning, backup and recovery strategies, and replication management, while continuously driving innovation by leveraging emerging data engineering trends, cloud technologies, and automation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Engineering & Integration
Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to move and transform data from various sources into data warehouses and analytics platforms.Develop, integrate, and maintain APIs to enable seamless data consumption and system interoperability.Architect and maintain robust data warehouse solutions to support analytics, reporting, and business intelligence needs.Implement real-time data streaming solutions using frameworks like Kafka or Apache Spark.Database Administration (DBA)
Manage and optimize SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases, ensuring high availability, performance tuning, indexing, and query optimization.Perform root cause analysis on database performance issues and recommend solutions to improve efficiency and scalability.Enforce database security, backup, recovery, and governance standards.Data Architecture & Governance
Contribute to the design of conceptual, logical, and physical data models.Define and enforce data traceability, quality, version control, and governance standards.Align data solutions with FirstRand architecture principles, integration patterns, and best practices.Collaboration & Leadership
Work closely with business stakeholders, data scientists, developers, and other engineers to understand requirements and deliver effective data solutions.Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers, sharing best practices and fostering innovation.Collaborate across teams to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve operational efficiency.Technology & Innovation
Stay up to date with emerging data engineering trends, cloud technologies, and automation practices.Recommend and implement innovative solutions that enhance system performance, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness.You will be an ideal candidate if you have:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field.3–5 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, database management, and data integration.Proven expertise in SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including:Performance tuning, indexing, query optimization.Backup, recovery, and replication strategies.Strong proficiency with SQL, Python, and experience with Java or C# for data automation.Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and big data technologies.Solid understanding of ETL tools, data modeling, and real-time data processing.Knowledge of DevOps/DataOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and version control (GIT).Familiarity with data governance, compliance, and security best practices.Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex data and system issues.Exposure to agile methodologies and cross-functional team collaboration.You will have access to:
