Starbucks Reserve Kitchen teams use their knowledge and expertise to craft fresh food offerings with impeccable ingredients to inspire and delight customers in our Reserve & Roastery locations. These are energetic environments for culinary ambassadors who want to deliver consistent quality handcrafted pastries, cakes, focaccia-style pizza, artisanal baked breads, and more. 

This position contributes to Starbucks success by leading a production team of Reserve Kitchen partners to elevate Starbucks food experience with Starbucks Reserve & Roastery retail locations in Seattle, New York, and Chicago. The Reserve Kitchen chef manager is required to regularly and customarily exercise discretion in managing the overall operation of the production environment. In particular, a majority of time is spent supervising and directing the workforce, making staffing decisions (i.e., hiring, training, evaluating, disciplining, discharging, staffing and scheduling), ensuring product quality, managing the department inventory, partnering with quality assurance and security within the facility.

As a chef manager, you will...

Leadership - Set goal for work group, develop organizational capability, and model how we work together.

Demonstrate a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual event and manage smooth transition thereafter to keep kitchen operating to standard and set a positive example for kitchen partner. Display a partner-first attitude by training and holding partner accountable for delivering quality product. Drive the implementation of company programs by developing action plans and directly motivate and instruct kitchen teams to implement and meet operational and organizational objectives. Manage with integrity, honesty, and knowledge that promote the culture, value, and mission of Starbucks. Plan, identify, communicate, and delegate appropriate responsibility and practice to kitchen partner to ensure smooth flow of operation. Provide coaching and direction for kitchen partners to take action. Constantly review kitchen environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns, and opportunities for improvement, and provide coaching and direction to partners to achieve operational goals.

Planning and Execution - Developing strategic and operational plans for food production, managing execution, and measuring results:

Review production schedules to determine the variety and quantity of goods to bake and to assemble supplies and equipment needed for daily baking activities. Attend to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures disposition of spoiled or unattractive food, defective supplies/equipment, and/or other unusual conditions Complete production sheets and other records as required. Monitor and manage Starbucks Reserve Kitchen staffing levels to ensure partner development and talent acquisition to achieve and maintain store operational requirements. Utilize existing tools to identify and prioritize communications and regularly use discretion to filter communications to the Starbucks Reserve Kitchen team. Communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately in order to ensure effective Starbucks Reserve Kitchen operations.

Business Requirements - Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:

Ensure adherence to applicable wage and hour laws for nonexempt partners and minors. Use all operational tools to plan for and achieve operational excellence within the kitchen to support monthly sales report, forecasting, and inventory management. Utilize management information tools and analyzes financial reports to identify and address trends and issues in Starbucks Reserve Kitchen performance.

Partner Development & Team Building - Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams: 

Actively manage Starbucks Reserve Kitchen partners by regularly conducting performance assessments, providing feedback, and setting challenging goals to improve partner performance. Manage ongoing partner performance using performance management tools to support organizational objectives. Challenge and inspire partners to achieve business results. Develop and maintain positive relationships with partners within Starbucks Reserve Kitchen by understanding and addressing individual motivation, cultural nuances, needs and concerns. Challenge and motivate partners to achieve business results. Ensure partners adhere to quality assurance, operational, and legal compliance requirements. Utilize and demonstrate effective management principles and practices to create and maintain a successful Starbucks Reserve Kitchen, resulting in an environment where partners are valued and respected.

Demonstrated Knowledge in one or more of the following areas - 2 years in aligned department operations – Expert in shipping & receiving, proper rotation, food storage, overall kitchen organization, while maintaining the highest level of kitchen cleanliness & sanitation baking – Expert in preparations of a variety of dough and breads, expert in quality control, while maintaining the highest level of culinary standards and kitchen cleanliness. culinary – Familiar with a variety of cooking techniques and practices using a wide range of ingredients. Confident in pastry culinary techniques and skills in making a variety of cakes, tarts, fillings and desserts while maintaining the highest level of culinary standards, expert in quality control, consistency and sanitation. Demonstrated agility in dealing with ambiguity associated with working in a fast paced, highly visible, and changing environment Excellent communication skills and fluent English required. Additional languages are beneficial. Able to organize and deploy work across people Excellent coach and role model of Starbucks Mission and Values. Ability to work on your feet for long periods of time   Ability to lift and carry 35lbs consistently or up to 55lbs periodically  Adheres to personal hygiene and standards of dress consistent with food safety standards of GMP kitchens  Demonstrates strong abilities as a team player.  Ability to build strong relationships and engage across differing cultures and societies Current local health and safety certifications Requires reading, writing, and oral proficiency in the English language 

Preferred Qualifications 

Baking or Culinary Certification/Degree Preferred High school or GED College degree in business or a closely related field may substitute for apportion of the required experience

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above. 

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
