The Native Aquatic Species Restoration Facility (NASRF) work unit exists to recover aquatic species in decline. The unit was built in 2000 to facilitate the conservation of rare aquatic native species identified as Threatened or Endangered (T&E), Species of Special Concern (SSC), or Species at Risk (SAR) through captive propagation, genetic conservation, scientific research, and public education and awareness. There are currently 12 fish species and one amphibian species on the unit. A limited knowledge base is currently available for the culture and propagation of these species. NASRF staff must ascertain water quality, photoperiod, dietary needs, and the appropriate spawning and habitat requirements unique to each species.
Methodologies are researched, and field trials are conducted in order to provide suitable animal husbandry techniques for each species. In addition, the work unit exists to propagate and amplify captive stocks in sufficient numbers for reintroduction or release into the resource to restore stable populations in portions of their historic range.
Description of Job
This position exists to rear endangered fish and amphibian species. The position anticipates, constructs, and manipulates aquatic rearing environments through various activities. Activities may include feeding according to nutritional requirements, monitoring fish health and behavior, performing calculated chemotherapeutic treatments, testing and analysis of water quality parameters, picking eggs, counting, weighing, and spawning fish, maintaining hatchery, nursery and rearing environments, keeping precise records, distributing aquatic species in transport tanks as requested and approved in COFISH, testing receiving waters, safe operation of assorted power tools, driving and operating heavy equipment such as trucks, backhoes, tractors, and UTV’s, and performing building & construction trade skills. This position is needed to produce federally endangered fish species successfully.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Fish Culture
This position assists with the capture of brood stocks, monitors, constructs and manipulates culture environments to maintain the health, growth, and reproduction of brood stocks. Performs hormonal injection of brood stocks, performs captive propagation and rearing of offspring of native aquatic species by utilizing proven and effective culture techniques. Assists in the development of new and improved culture techniques, feeds according to nutritional requirements specific to each aquatic species, anticipates and manipulates water quality by obtaining water tests for parameters critical to the health of native aquatic species. Makes precise biological and environmental assessments to maintain healthy, sustainable culture environments within established procedures and guidelines specific to each aquatic species. Maintains accurate and punctual records of all pertinent data. Cleans and disinfects culture environments and sterilizes equipment as required. Maintains proper disinfection procedures to help prevent the spread of diseases. Prevents or diagnoses disease by recognizing signs and abnormal behaviors of stressed and diseased native aquatic species. Prevents and treats disease by calculating and administering the correct dosage of chemotherapeutants approved for use. Must be knowledgeable and proficient in the use of laboratory equipment, aseptic techniques, identification of disease organisms, drug and chemical applicability and precise water flows, drug and/or chemical dose calculation and disinfecting techniques.
Native Fish/Amphibian Reintroduction & Distribution
This position works closely with Aquatic Species Conservation Biologists and other State and Federal agencies, safely transports and/or reintroduces native aquatic species into portions of their historic ranges, distributes native aquatic species as requested and approved in CCFISH, monitors environmental conditions in both transport tanks and receiving waters to assure the highest possible degree of survival, and complies with all State DOT and federal motor carrier safety guidelines.
Building, Fabrication, & Construction
This position performs basic carpentry, inspects and maintains existing electrical infrastructure, builds fences, drives and operates heavy equipment used in construction projects, safely uses pneumatic tools, power tools, hand tools, and small heavy equipment used in construction projects, performs placement, finishing, protecting, and repairing of concrete in construction projects, positions and secures reinforcing bars and mesh used to reinforce concrete in construction projects, installs and maintains systems used for plumbing, heating, chilling, and drainage of water, installs and maintains metal roofing, and performs welding of metals, plastics, and polymers.
Fish Health and Pathology
Performs analysis and prevention by recognizing signs and symptoms of stressed and diseased fish, including treatment and prevention by calculating and administering the proper amount of drug or chemical used for treatment. It must be knowledgeable and proficient in the use of laboratory microscopes, identification of disease organisms, drug and chemical applicability, and precise water flow, drug and/or chemical dose calculation and disinfecting techniques.
Administration
This position keeps accurate and punctual records of activities, observations, and conditions related to the culture and propagation of native aquatic species, submits records and observations both written and verbally to management and staff during weekly staff meetings or as required, maintains current record of all native aquatic species inventories, reports to supervisor when brood stocks require replenishment with new individuals from the wild and/or captive bred, maintains daily activity reports (DARS) specific to each species and monthly KRONOS timesheets in a timely fashion, submits Leave/Absence Request and Authorization forms in a timely fashion, records flow data on daily well reports, keeps general purchase receipts and OneCard receipts, maintains in-house move & transfer, mortality, and disease treatment logbooks, maintains current feed sheets, maintains accurate and punctual stocking and transfer tickets, and maintains driver’s logs and vehicle inspection reports as required by DOT regulations.
Facility and Equipment Maintenance
This position inspects, services, and modifies any equipment, physical facilities, buildings, and water delivery systems that are required to raise native aquatic species. Duties may include, but are not limited to, minor remodeling and painting, mowing, weed control, and irrigation, culvert and pipeline installation, and snow removal. This position inspects and maintains various vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, pickup trucks, fish trucks, forklifts, backhoes, tractors, ATVs, welders, generators, power tools, pumps, mowers, and work carts. This position ensures that aquaculture equipment and vehicles are kept in safe and proper working condition by repairing, lubricating, inspecting, cleaning, and servicing them. It designs, invents, fabricates, tests, and calibrates new or specialized equipment for aquaculture use to increase productivity and enhance efficiency.
Safety and Security
This position responds to all alarm situations and provides security for the rearing unit while following standard operational procedures and MSDS for hazardous materials storage and use. It keeps areas clean and clear, well organized, and structured.
Temporary Employee Training
This position assists in the general oversight of work performed by seasonal temporary, student work-study, and volunteer employees. It oversees temporary employees, student work-studies, and volunteers to ensure assigned tasks are completed according to standard operating procedures and accepted professional standards. It trains, directs, and explains work assignments and procedures to new employees, temporary employees, student work-studies, and volunteers.
Public Relations
This position promotes and explains the policies, goals, and directives of Colorado Parks and Wildlife by providing public tours of the fish hatchery and courteously answering questions. It provides information about wildlife and fisheries operations while giving tours and while on fish/amphibian stocking trips. It conducts guided tours of the hatchery as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Three years of work experience in aquaculture, propagating and/or rearing fish, fish culture, collecting and recording of aquatic wildlife data and/or professional aquatic research or an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
Substitutions
+ Appropriate education in biology, fisheries research, fisheries management, or fisheries biology, ecology, wildlife management, zoology, marine biology or ichthyology may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis for the experience requirement.

Conditions of Employment
+ State of Colorado residency is required at the time of application.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.
+ Exempt from overtime, on-call 24/7
+ This position will require but is not limited to the handling of formalin, bleach, disinfection solutions, equipment batteries, gasoline, diesel, spray paint, and motor oil. Appropriate PPE will be provided.
+ Hazing of predatory birds/animals will require the use of discharging cracker/pyrotechnics as a deterrent.
+ Will regularly drive fish trucks to various locations around the state in all types of weather for fish stocking. Will occasionally be required to travel overnight to varied locations around the state for training or work assignments.
