If you thrive in a collaborative environment and are committed to delivering high-quality care, we want to hear from you!Apply today — help patients and families navigate their mental health journeys with compassion and expertise!Position Overview:The Behavioral Health Counselor facilitates patient involvement in treatment and education, performing individual, group, and family counseling. You will collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure timely, safe, and effective care, while providing resources and education to patients and families.You will assess psychosocial risk factors, provide mental health assessments upon physician referral, and support complex discharge planning. Your role includes serving as the primary contact for cases involving abuse, neglect, guardianship, foster care, and mental health placements, utilizing de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques to promote safety.Key Responsibilities:Facilitate patient participation in treatment, education, and discharge planning.Perform individual, group, and family counseling sessions.Collaborate effectively with the healthcare team to ensure safe and timely services.Interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, role model caring practices.Assess psychosocial risk factors based on prior functioning, support systems, and reactions to illness.Counsel patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness or disability.Access and mobilize community and family resources, including protective services, guardianship, foster care, and adoption.Conduct mental health assessments as ordered by physicians.Serve as the point person for abuse/neglect cases and liaison with protective teams.Support high-risk situations with crisis intervention, utilizing de-escalation techniques.Assist with complex discharge planning and safety assessments.Qualifications & Requirements:Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field required.Licensure: Current licensure or license eligibility in Indiana as an HSPP, LMFT, LCSW, or LMHC required.Clinical licensure preferred.Certifications: CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) certification may be required.Experience: Relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred.Knowledge & Skills:Knowledge of the impact of disease processes and human behavior for assessments, counseling, and crisis intervention.Understanding of state and county legal mandates related to protective services.Principles of growth and development across the lifespan.Strong crisis de-escalation and interviewing techniques.Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.Why IU Health?IU Health is Indiana’s largest and most comprehensive healthcare system, committed to delivering exceptional outpatient mental health care.
