Job Description

The Corporate Controller will lead all accounting operations within a dynamic manufacturing environment, with responsibility for financial reporting, month-end close, internal controls, and cost/WIP accounting. This hands-on role oversees a small accounting team and partners closely with operations to ensure accurate costing, inventory valuation, and production reporting. The position is ideal for a senior-level accounting professional seeking broader responsibility, leadership exposure, and development toward a future Controller-level career path.

Responsibilities

Own and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement accuracy.Review and approve balance sheet reconciliations, account analysis, and flux/variance explanations to ensure completeness and reliability of financial information.Prepare and present internal financial statements and management reports that clearly communicate performance and key drivers to leadership.Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal accounting policies, and internal control requirements across all accounting processes.Lead manufacturing and cost accounting activities, including Work-in-Process (WIP) accounting, inventory valuation, and cost of goods sold.Monitor and analyze standard versus actual costs, production variances, and margins, and provide insights and recommendations to improve profitability.Partner closely with operations to support cost accuracy, inventory controls, and production reporting, ensuring alignment between finance and manufacturing activities.Oversee payroll accounting, including payroll journal entries, reconciliations, and coordination with third-party payroll providers.Review and ensure accurate calculation, recording, and reconciliation of commission and incentive compensation programs.Support audits, tax-related requests, and regulatory reporting by providing accurate schedules, documentation, and responses in a timely manner.Manage, coach, and develop a small accounting team by providing direction, review, feedback, and mentorship to support their professional growth.Establish, document, and maintain accounting procedures, process documentation, and internal controls to support a strong control environment.Identify process inefficiencies within accounting operations and lead process improvement and automation initiatives to enhance accuracy and efficiency.Collaborate with leadership to prioritize accounting projects, meet close deadlines, and support strategic financial initiatives.Leverage advanced Excel skills and ERP or accounting systems to streamline reporting, analysis, and reconciliations across the organization.

Essential Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2–3 years at the senior Accountant level or equivalent.Demonstrated ownership of month-end close activities, including preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, and account analysis.Hands-on experience with payroll processing, including payroll journal entries, reconciliations, and coordination with third-party providers.Experience calculating, recording, and reconciling commission or incentive compensation.Strong working knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.Manufacturing industry experience with cost accounting, including WIP, inventory valuation, and cost of goods sold.Managerial or supervisory experience leading or developing accounting staff.Proficiency in Excel, including advanced functions such as pivot tables and VLOOKUP.Experience with core accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.Advanced Excel skills and experience working within an ERP or accounting system.Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and consistently meet close and reporting deadlines.Clear written and verbal communication skills, with sound judgment and high attention to detail.Well-developed organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with a hands-on approach.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in a multi-entity, fast-paced, or high-transaction environment.Prior exposure to audits, consolidations, or system and process improvement initiatives.CPA license or active progress toward CPA certification preferred but not required.Experience with Sage Intacct is a plus but not required.Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees, customers, and vendors.Interest in long-term growth into a Controller-level or higher leadership role.Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, particularly operations, to support cost accuracy and inventory control.Demonstrated initiative in identifying opportunities for automation and process enhancement within accounting workflows.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional manufacturing office environment with close collaboration between accounting and operations teams. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with additional time as needed during peak close or reporting periods. The role uses modern ERP or accounting systems along with advanced Excel tools, and involves frequent work with financial data, cost information, and production-related reporting. The environment is fast-paced and high-volume, requiring strong focus, organization, and a hands-on approach to problem solving, while maintaining a professional standard of dress appropriate for an office setting within a manufacturing company.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ashburn, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $67.31 - $72.12/hr.
