Job Description
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance functions. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial data, supports strategic decision-making, and maintains compliance with all applicable federal, state (including New York), and local regulations. The Controller partners closely with executive leadership to drive financial performance and operational efficiency, while building strong accounting processes that support continued growth.
ResponsibilitiesOversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.Prepare, review, and analyze profit and loss statements and other financial statements to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.Lead the month-end close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, and preparation of supporting schedules.Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state (including New York), and local financial, tax, and payroll regulations.Manage and oversee payroll processes, including union payroll and certified payroll, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant requirements.Oversee job costing and project accounting, ensuring costs are accurately captured, allocated, and reported for skilled trades operations.Develop, maintain, and improve financial reporting to support executive leadership in strategic and operational decision-making.Prepare and analyze ad hoc financial reports using Excel to provide insights into business performance and support key initiatives.Collaborate with executive leadership to drive financial performance, operational efficiency, and effective budgeting and forecasting.Monitor financial trends and variances, identify risks and opportunities, and recommend corrective actions when needed.Ensure accurate reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.Support external audits, reviews, and regulatory examinations by providing required documentation and explanations.Implement and optimize the use of Sage Intacct and other financial systems to improve efficiency and reporting capabilities.Contribute to the continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and systems to support the company’s growth.Essential Skills5–10 years of experience in accounting or a similar controller-type role.Proven experience in the skilled trades industry or a closely related field.Strong knowledge of profit and loss statements and financial statement preparation and analysis.Hands-on experience managing payroll, including union payroll and certified payroll.Proficiency in month-end close processes, including reconciliations and financial reporting.Solid understanding of job costing and project accounting in an operational environment.Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and complex formulas, with the ability to create and analyze ad hoc reports.Strong knowledge of internal controls and compliance with federal, state (including New York), and local regulations.Ability to partner effectively with executive leadership and communicate financial information clearly.High attention to detail, accuracy, and integrity in all financial work.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with Sage Intacct or similar cloud-based accounting/ERP systems.Background in a skilled trades or construction-related environment.Demonstrated ability to improve accounting processes and financial reporting.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple deadlines, and adapt in a growing organization.Comfort working with large data sets and building customized financial reports in Excel.Work Environment
This is a fully on-site role in a professional office environment. The Controller works on-site Monday through Friday, with typical shifts such as 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., or 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. The team uses modern accounting software, including Sage Intacct, along with Excel for extensive reporting and analysis. The environment supports close collaboration with executive leadership and operations teams and offers clear opportunities for growth within the company. Professional business attire is expected, reflecting regular interaction with leadership and external partners.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $130000.00 - $160000.00/yr.
