Job Summary

Battelle’s Defense and Material Solutions Business Unit is currently seeking a Computer Engineer. This position is located at Columbus, OH.

 

The person selected for this position will be responsible for the design, development, test, and production of complex electronic and electromechanical systems with some technical oversight. The ability to troubleshoot and debug existing systems is also required. The person filling this position will be expected to function as part of a technical team which may be composed of engineers, technicians, and support staff. This person will perform assignments such as designing electrical schematics, writing embedded firmware, compiling and evaluating design and test data, and preparing technical specifications. The person will be capable of finding solutions and answers beyond the area of experience.

 

Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Assignments may involve research for device and technology development; the design, build and integration of hardware and software components for computing systems and networks; and development of specifications for assigned system components.

Responsibilities Performs assignments of moderate complexity by compiling and evaluating design and test data, preparing technical specifications, analyzing technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for computing systems, components, equipment, and networks.Interprets, compiles and analyzes data collected and writes various technical reports.Design, fabricate, and integrate electronic systems as part of an integrated technical teamTest and troubleshoot electronic systemsGenerate and interpret electrical schematicsReverse-engineer electronic systemsGenerate and debug firmware code for microprocessors used in embedded systemsGenerate appropriate documentation including technical manuals and proceduresInterpret, compile and analyze data collected and write various technical reportsComplete assigned project work within schedule and budget constraintsBuild relationships with internal clientsContribute to Independent Research and Development (IR&D) studiesContribute to technical presentations for internal and external clientsCapable of working with minimal technical oversightAssists with proposal efforts as needed.Presents to clients.Supports business development efforts led by others.May oversee lower-level staff in extracting and preparing data for analysis.Understand practical design concepts, best practices, and industry standard approaches when selecting hardware components and software solutionsAssist with proposal efforts as neededSupport business development efforts led by othersKey Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited electrical/computer engineering program with 2-5 years of experience or master’s degree in related field with 1-4 years of experienceCandidate must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance at the TS/SCI levelPhysically fit to accomplish required tasks including working from ladders and in confined spacesAbility to work independently and as part of a teamPositive attitude, good character, and eagerness to take on technical challengesExcellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skillsProblem solving ability and commitment to quality results under schedule deadlinesSolid grasp of basic electrical engineering concepts and ability to learnExperience with standard lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, etc.Experience with computer languages/programs such as C, MATLAB, Word, Excel, etc.Experience working in a lab environment, including preparing, conducting, and documenting tests, soldering, and wiringFamiliarity with electrical engineering design tools (Altium, Spice simulation tools, etc.) and methods (concept, design, build, test, lifecycle support)Experience generating and interpreting engineering schematicsExperience with embedded systems design, programming, and troubleshootingTravel when required by project tasksPreferred Qualifications US citizenship with active DOD Level 5 Top Secret (TS) clearance Signal processing experience, both software and hardware basedExperience with underwater systems – sonar, propulsion, etc.Significant mathematical background – math courses or related engineering courses such as control systems, signal processing, etc.Experience with programming in additional languages
