Computational mechanics thesis internship: Uncertainty quantification for coupled reduced order models
Introduction

Are you a Master’s student in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering with a specialization in Computational Mechanics? Are you passionate about reduced order modeling and eager to apply your skills to real-world industrial challenges? If so, this internship opportunity might be the perfect fit for your graduation thesis project.

Background

Within the Mechanical Development cluster, we are developing advanced methods for system-level simulations aimed at reducing development time and minimizing the need for physical testing. These virtual testing environments integrate physics-based simulation engines with ASML software, with Reduced Order Models (ROMs) playing a central role. These models capture the essential behavior of machine components under complex, transient, and multi-physics conditions—such as thermal deformation due to varying heat flux.

Your assignment

Your task will be to investigate and develop uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods for coupled reduced order models. You will begin with single-physics, single-component systems and progressively build toward more complex coupled systems.

Key activities include:

Identifying subsystem interfaces (inputs and outputs).Determining relevant physics, material models, and boundary conditions.Creating models in Ansys or COMSOL, and preparing them for ROM generation using MATLAB or Python.Generating reduced order models.Exploring UQ techniques to quantify error propagation within individual models.Extending UQ techniques to assess error propagation across coupled system models.Proposing a general and streamlined workflow for performing such analyses.Documenting all steps and findings in a comprehensive report for future reference.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate who:

Is pursuing a Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering with a focus on Computational Mechanics.Has a solid understanding of continuum mechanics, particularly in transient thermal and vibrational problems. Is proficient in classical numerical methods and linear algebra.Has experience with commercial simulation tools such as Ansys or COMSOL.Is skilled in scripting and rapid prototyping using MATLAB and/or Python.Possesses strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.Having knowledge of statistical techniques and uncertainty quantification is a plus.

This is a Master thesis internship for 6 to 9 months, starting as soon as possible.

Other requirements you need to meetYou are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship; You need to be located in the Netherlands to be able to perform your internship. In case you ‘re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate. If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
